Re: Writing thing

So like this thread on SB (I trust you don't mind if I post it there too, do you)? I must admit to cheating a bit on this, I spent a bit more than 30 minutes on it: 2/ http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/218/f/8/babel_04_by_duster132-d6gzubi.jpg So this is Paran. Ancient, grand Paran. A world wit...

Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance

I actually kind of agree with a guy on SB who suggested a better alternative term to "rape culture" would be "rape apologism." The problem with "rape culture" is you basically have to explain to people that it isn't crazy; that it doesn't actually mean we have a culture...

Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance

It's not even a free speech issue; no one's asking for censorship. What he's prioritising is his ability to say whatever he wants regardless of consequences and avoid all criticism for it. I've noticed this trend of thinking negative social consequences for saying stuff is evil infringement of your...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

I think I've managed to track down where that "43% of college-aged men admitted to using coercive behavior to have sex" statistic came from, unfortunately it's a book that has no Google preview.

Edit: it's over 20 years old, I wonder what the results would be today...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

Kikuchi's character, Mako Mori, seems to be almost universally uncriticized on Tumblr, where she stars in fanart, gifsets, headcanons, fanfiction, and routine gusts of praise from female fans who love that her character is neither sexually objectified nor given a narrative arc that revolves around ...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

Anyway, where I'm coming from is I suspect trying to convince rapists to be nicer people is largely going to either fall on deaf ears or be preaching to the choir. The kind of men who are likely to listen are unlikely to rape anyway. The kind of men who are likely to rape are unlikely to listen. Wha...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

If they're protesting in any way and you acknowledge but ignore it or if you have to use physical aggression for it, I don't care how "vague" that is; that's rape. If one person kisses another, and the other person tries to push them away, but then changes their mind and gives implicit co...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

This page shows studies that 1/12 college men admitted to actions constituting legal rape (but 84% did not consider it rape) and 43% of college men admit to using coercion to get sex, which is rape in any but the most legalistic sense. I wonder what their definition of "coercive behavior"...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

This just showed up on my dashboard today. Pretty good timing http://rajsivaraman.wordpress.com/2013/06/05/a-scientific-case-against-rape-jokes/ The backing up what it's saying with actual science is pretty cool, but I find myself mildly annoyed with the way discussion of rape culture seems to ofte...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

I'm not exactly rooting for the Muslim Brotherhood (though the fact that they remained pacifist over 40 years of repression does impress me), but I am sick of certain smug liberals who were cheering when the military took over and insisted that a military coup was in some way serving democracy -- a...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

It's because this stuff isn't just a sexual thing; that's just one symptom of it. If you can't find yourself attracted to an entire race, especially one denigrated by societal standards, odds are incredibly high that's not just some sexual quirk of yours, but part of a larger thing of you unconscio...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

I'm not going to judge a person simply for having such a bias, but if they cling to it consciously rather than making the choice to try to get around it when the issue comes to light, then comes the judgement. What do you mean by "try to get around it"? The idea that you should feel some ...

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach

No, you didn't, but what possible reason could a doctor's or parent's assignment of gender to someone play in how attracted you are to them? It's not the assigned gender that's the issue for you, and it should be pretty obvious what actually is (your mind seeing those people as men anyway) You know...

So, entertainingly crazy people... I stumbled on this while looking for info on early warfare. I don't think I've ever seen anyone run with the dung ages view of history quite so hard. As far as I can tell their thesis is pretty much that human sociality as we know it is a modern phenomenon and bas...

Re: Testing Chat IV: A New Hope

My main issue with the whole separatism idea is it sounds pretty utopian As in, completely ignoring the actual political realities which I'm p sure would make such a project a complete non-starter That and on general principles I'm kind of leery of "we'll solve the problem by moving them away f...
