English is one of the official languages of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and you can easily live your entire life there without speaking a word of Chinese. If you were going to learn Chinese to fit in there you would want to learn Cantonese, not Mandarin. Getting work on the mainland ...

Re: Testing Episode IV: A New Lament

Isn't Switzerland the country where getting citizenship/residency requires literally the entire town/county you settled in to unanimously vote to let you have it?

Re: Testing Episode IV: A New Lament

Hong Kong permanent residency is supposed to be automatic after seven years if you can find work there. Alternatively, the mainland still needs ESL teachers.

Re: Testing Episode IV: A New Lament

I ended up chatting with an old Chinese woman who was picking her granddaughter up after school yesterday. She commented that I look like I'm an Uyghur and mimed cowering in fear.

And in totally unrelated news, the Baton Rouge police just murdered a black guy.

Facebook's trending stories sidebar was weaving a fucking narrative yesterday morning.

Re: Testing Episode IV: A New Lament

I have now read Craig Schaefer's entire catalog. Kindle Unlimited is a wonderful thing. In some ways I think I actually like his straight fantasy series more than his two urban fantasy series. I really should have tried it sooner.

Re: Testing Episode IV: A New Lament

And in more important news, the crazy woman elected in Taiwan province has doubled down on her lunatic policy of separatism and provocation by not admitting that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. The government has cut off all communication with her illegal regime as a result. When she was fir...

Re: Testing Episode IV: A New Lament

The English oppressed my ancestors so I'm glad that they're going to collectively suffer as their economy slides into the toilet as a result of this. As a bonus, it means that Scotland and possibly even Bad Ireland will get their independence from the UK after all. Which is also good. Kind of sucks ...

It's now a hate crime for black people to kill cops in Lousiana.

It's good that they closed that loophole.

I started watching Sfdebris's reviews of Deep Space Nine. They're pretty good. I should have gotten into the habit of watching him sooner.

Am I remembering right that he's a member of/started from SD.net?

How To Search A Hotel Room For Clues I pretended I owned the place, asked for extra towels, and gave the nice lady a sizable tip— oh, and I ordered plentiful room service— all charged to Room 2417. High-end crab, shoestring fries, and a couple cervezas. It took the edge off. …I spent most of the ti...

Oh god fucking damn it. Manatees are no longer endangered in the United States.

God I fucking hate environmentalist traitors. One more bunch of big stupid mammals we were so close to ridding the earth of.

I visited my relatives in Texas this weekend. My cousin's ten year old told me her friends tease her for watching My Little Pony "because it's for little babies."

I guess some problems are universal.
