Kodak Brownie Nr 2, Ilford HP5 film, home development. This is what a snapshot looks like with WW1-era tech.

I've always had a hard time nailing exposure with an SLR. Any tips?

Practice. I don't get good consistent good exposures either.

Try bracketing your shots. Set your exposure, take the shot, then go one stop up and down for the next two shots. See which one works best and adjust accordingly.

Shoot RAW if your camera supports it, it'll help you recover over- and underexposed shots in post.

Check your histogram and void skewing it all the way to the left or right.

Also appreciate the irony since the Kodak this was taken with is literally a point and shoot with zero exposure controls except "wait until the sunlight looks kinda in the ballpark".
