Yeah. And Bashir too, on a console no less, so that when he has to take O'Brien down to sickbay because he's been seriously wounded (on the bridge while the shields are still fine) they're now down two stations.

They're at least sticking to precedent here. Bashir was on the bridge at one of the consoles in 'The Search part 1' and he took over the helm in that very episode when a redshirt died after the ship took another hit.

maybe julian is a super-doctor, multi-talented in disparate fields

or maybe stafleet LCAR interfaces are user-friendly :v

They'd need to be. Every single workstation is can be reformatted to run whatever systems you need. I'd assume that part of the Ops Manager's job on a larger ship is essentially network sysadmin for the bridge stations.

If I remember my TNG correctly, it's to go crazy, be involved in plots against the Federation, do something illegal or otherwise make life miserable for the Captains.

But yeah, just started season 3. Wonder why they changed the commbadges for no apparent reason? Also is it me or are the undershirts more purple than before? I mean I knew they'd end up purple (seriously, Starfleet :wtc: were you thinking on that uniform change?) but I'd swear they were gray in seasons 1 and 2. Also odd that Jadzia's hair changed for The Search but seems to be back in the ol' ponytail, at least for episode 3. Since next ep according to Netflix is a Dax focus guess I'll find out...

Oh yeah, sucks that the Odyssey went and died. Kinda shocking to see them take down a GCS like that. Was that the first one to fall in combat? IIRC one blew up in TNG but that was a computer virus. Unless there were some GCSs in Wolf 359 that I don't remember... But yeah, bit of an "oh shit" moment there.

Also, Odo's uniform in season 3 is way better than his original one. What was up with these shows and uniform changes (mostly for the better, purple shirts aside) in the third season?

Speaking of fuzzy chain of command, what was up with O'Brien giving orders to Ensigns? He was supposed to be an enlisted character, so why not just make those Engineering peeps crewmen and leave off the pips?

Yeah I know, TNG-era Trek has always been weird about the officer/enlisted thing, but when you intentionally insert an enlisted character in the show, you'd think the writers would at least leave the various red/goldshirts O'Brien barks at with vague ranks if nothing else. Explicitly naming them an Ensign is just, well... :wtc:

julian is also a super-doctor as it turned out though :v

Oddly enough the helm console also doubles as the ops console. Which honestly doesn't seem right to me. I'd assume the helm officer would have his hands full flying the ship without simultaneously having to coordinate operations stuff. The only part that sorta makes sense is that the Defiant would be way more streamlined for a singular purpose than something like a Galaxy-class starship, meaning perhaps it is possible to merge the two stations for a small ship like the Defiant that has only a few mission profiles. I mean, they have at least two tactical consoles so, yeah :v

O'Brien was literally retconned into being an enlisted man despite appearing on TNG numerous times with lieutenant's pips on his collar.

on the other hand everyone knows ensigns are pushovers :3

Yep, that's the excuse for TNG. So I live with that.

But I was talking about DS9 itself. I mean, from the start they seemed to intend him as an NCO, but they still made him explicitly give orders to Ensigns. Which was odd, because I do recall seeing random goldshirts with no pips so they could have just as easily have gone that route rather than O'Brien bossing around explicit officers. I think they even used the term "Crewman" a couple times but I can't remember.
Stofsk wrote:on the other hand everyone knows ensigns are pushovers :3
That certainly explains Nog taking orders from O'Brien when he came back as an Ensign (as Memory Alpha informs me).

But then he was Nog and I'm pretty sure even if he made it to Admiral random junior officers and crewers would still be able to push him around. :picard:

(okay okay maybe he gets better character development later, but I'm only starting on season 3 and thus far he hasn't impressed)

Look the Federation is more enlightened than 20th century Earth barbarians so surely a Proper NCO like O'Brien would respect an officer's rank. :colbert:

Season 7 of DS9 is not turning out to be gripping watching. Watched the first couple of episodes, and they're ok. I'm amused by the quotes on memory alpha saying they wanted to defy expectations by not doing a big premiere like previous. Yeah, we also expected it to be good telly. Going against expectation does not automatically mean good. They pulled the same line for kirk's crappy death scene IIRC.

Anyway, I keep getting bored and switching off Afterimage. I want to like Ezri and its got Garak so it should be good its just... not.

Then again if I skip that I'm onto the baseball episode. I remember that one being fun when I first watched it but I can't pretended the people saying why are you devoting episode to holodeck fun time instead of developing your arc don't have a point.

ok so afterimage defeated me watching fictional characters play baseball is where its at

does it make sense arc wise? not really? is it silly? yeah. cliché? most probably. is it lots of fun? Damn straight.

And for adr, its first church of sisko time. Sisko's a total dick to rom in this episode kicking him off the team for the sole reason he's crap and can't play worth a damn the big meanie but by the end of the episode? he realises he's wrong and entirely without prompting or calling out from anyone makes it to rom, lets him play (which ends up them scoring their only run) and apologies. like a man. that's the kind of person the future should have amirite?

course church of sisko is more problematic than church of picard since sisko occasionally did thing like trick people into wars and attempt biocide of planets

also he;s an actual religious figure so there could be an actual church of sisko in-universe like a bajoran sect or something

I'm loving DS9, gotta be honest here. The characters honestly do feel more real. And Chief O'Brien and Bashir totally need to be in a buddy cop movie.

I also like the way, thus far, they've handled death in the show. Even though nobody's really died. When they though the Doc and the Chief bought it in that early episode, I was totally digging on it.

But anyway I'm getting to the end of season 4. Should be some good stuff when the Dominion War finally kicks off, right?

So the DS9 Mirror Universe episodes are cool. Just watched "Shattered Mirror". Awesome pew pews, BTW.

But really, it's a little surprising. They made the Terrans to be good guys. They've still got some rough edges obviously: Bashir is a jerkass, and while Smiles is generally decent he has kidnapped and deceived The Sisko to get what he needs. But yeah, you do root for them. A far cry obviously from "Mirror, Mirror" and "In A Mirror, Darkly" which makes me wonder if, should the Rebellion succeed, will they go back to being evil?

Sadly I don't know that we get an answer to this question. Reading Memory Alpha about the Mirror Universe arc, it seems the only two eps they did for it after are about Kira pining for that Vedek dude and then the Ferengis getting into some hijinks. So was the Rebellion against the Alliance (lol) thing ever resolved on the show, or left hanging?
