Not exactly a reader but they got in shit for trying to offer a "save to PDF" function in Office (which eventually did get introduced):
CNET article wrote:Adobe has threatened to file an antitrust complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission if the software giant includes the PDF "save as" feature in its Office 2007, Heiner added.

...

One reason Microsoft is taking these steps is to avoid further clashes with the European Commission, which is reviewing whether to level a massive fine against the software maker, Heiner said. European regulators found that Microsoft engaged in antitrust behavior by bundling in its Media Player with its operating system. They also found that the company had put up hindrances to competitors that wanted to design enterprise software that would interoperate with Windows.

The European Commission is already taking a look at Vista, and it voiced its concerns in March over such issues as the possible bundling of PDF-like formatting capabilities in its operating system.

But people generally use PDF printers and nobody cares?

ADR, from these cases what do you think are the 'acceptable' ways of advertising their stuff ms has

Cause most other os use their update thing to tout stuff and ms does so in a really inept way

you know what i find funny

someone makes a game that looks like it's from the early '90s, but still has ridiculous performance requirements

how do they even do it :psyduck:

also people in greece voting for neo-nazis, and how it is shocking to people with no knowledge of european politics over the last decade or so

also "Do you really want to use body counts as a measuring stick? Because Fascism is a third" and "OWS idiots refuse to take the blame for a large chunk of selfinflicted suffering due to idiocy and rhink that basically Socialism can work in America"

especially that last thing

it's like does he believe america is special and "socialism", as in slightly differently regulated capitalism, cannot work there? but it can work elsewhere? cause if he thought it couldn't work at all he'd just say that and not add "in america"

i'mma go out on a limb and guess he's not one of those that proclaim the untenability of that soviet slogan "socialism in one country"

these are things that are funny to me

I find it funny how much the Singulitarian Fundamentalists seem to despise the flesh they are made off, and how ready they seems to are to do away with it. Almost make you think there's something deeper behind it than just techno-fetishism...

What's more funny to me, is that the day Civilization fall, or even simply if they were to be stranded away, isolated ; is that lest their "augmentations" can be run from blood nutrients and self-repaired like genuine flesh, all their shiny prosthetics will quickly become just so much dead weight once they start failing from lack of power or maintenance.

" Do not believe those who would defile the Flesh with cold, un-living metal. For it is not the Flesh that is weak, but their Mind ! The un-living metal can only rust, while the Flesh can Grow ! The Flesh is Strong, the Flesh Endure !- those who forsake it, truly, are only weakening themselves. "

I'm not going to deny that there are lots of guys on the internet who only like transhumanism because of the notion that they can 'better themselves'. For some people this is because they've spent a lot of their lives sick in some way, for others its pure narcissism.

But you know, every year the world gets bigger, faster and more connected, and every year people just stay the way they always were: dumbly adapting to things they barely understand. I don't think society really knows how to cope with the things its creating. You laugh about 'them' needing civilisation to survive, but it's really the other way around.

i wonder how much of it is just fat nerdism

like what if they are fat and too weak to unfatten themselves - physiologically, not metaphorically

so they stick their brains full of bloop bloop roboto tobor things as some kind of crutch, a coping mechanism

while yes, i am sure there are genuine folks who do believe that sufficiently advanced technologies will change mankind and transubstantiate it into something greater - like how modern tech makes us gods compared to prehistoric mudfarmers - and i myself do subscribe to this view as, hey, it's pretty much fact

like any other creed or belief or fad or fashion or whatever, however, these sensible folks will get drowned out by the flocks and throngs of plain inadequate broken people who adhere themselves to these intangible things because of their own incompleteness - and the more deprived they are as people, the more un-objectively and fucktardedly and perspectivelessly do they view whatever value system it is that they cling to in order to give themselves meaning

i guess we all need to attach ourselves, or attach things to ourselves, to give meaning to us

but i guess what i am saying is that the more fucked up the person is, the more he/she'll fuck that thing up and become a fucktard or something and take whatever it is he/she subscribes to into a extremes of fucking lame

In a manner of speaking. While socialism could work in the US in theory, it currently can't because of the hostility to anything that can be even remotely connected to the concept. There would need to be a major cultural and political shift before any socialist policies could be adopted here without them being immediately sabotaged into worthlessness by the powers that be.

So yes, regarding socialism, America is special, but in a :hurfhurf: way.

it's pretty interesting that as society get more and more unliveable for humans, people are still so blinded to their social situation that they believe humanity itself will have to change in order to fit the society the profit machine is generating

rather than, you know, alter society to be one geared towards human prosperity

or do people seriously believe that transhuman implants and whatever will actually magically be available to everyone, and not just generate an underclass of normal people too poor to afford them?

The more I work with computers, the more I start to view humans as analogous to the microorganisms that live in our body writ large. Some humans perform a specific task to keep the body running, like the bacteria that helps us digest food and the motes that live in our scalp and eat dead skin. Some (like the Gordon Gecko-style capitalists) are the parasites, who at best feed off the organism while contributing nothing, or at worst actively harm the system.

People can't cope with the scale of the world they live in the same way an intestinal bacteria can't really understand the scale of the body it lives in.
