I like how he continually makes strong women characters, but nearly all of them are young waifish white women. Why not older women of color?
Zoe?
Notice where it says "nearly all" and not "all"? :v

There was a plot?
When people say that about Michael Bay, they suffer at the hands of derision. What makes Whedon so special?
When they don't pick up on the sarcasm?

For the record, I consider The Avengers to be one of Whedon's better works. It is particularly noteworthy for the fact that the primary female character is over the age of consent.

Whedon is just the nerd equivalent of Michael Bay, albeit one who usually spends more time on the women side of the women and explosions continuum. It's just that he's a massive nerd, so nerds like him.

As for Loki being gay? I didnt get that, but then my approach to that in movies is to simply put a character's sexuality into a box until it becomes relevant or obvious. (P.S. by obvious, I mean Tony Stark obvious).

i love the idea that actually looking at the film is 'ruining' it because explosions are so sublime and totally 100% free of any meaning at all

right?

It's always nice to see people say "You make up shit to seem cultured" when people have opposing views on works of art. It's not like these people may actually see these things and offer up points to support them.

I wonder how many at SDN are aware of narrative distance and how it's possible to discern things in works of art because the authors, filmmakers, whatever, have certain views on matters.

My lit professor related a funny anecdote. He told us that when he was in university, he was taught that Shakespeare meant X and Y. He is glad that things are changing.

Ok, so yeah, Zinegata's kind of a tool, bringing up NT like that somehow ends the argument, but man I have no idea what the fuck bakky's talking about in that Avengers thread.

On the whole Loki=gay thing, yeah I guess you could kind of see it if you squint, and I could see how a particularly sensitive individual might be offended, but the plot being about dueling forms of Fascism? That I don't get.

its pretty alarming that anyone can still be 'surprised' by this element of comicbooks

i hear i was mentioned in a thread :neckbeard:

but it is a pretty weird thread

i mean how hard is it really to imagine someone less crazy than hitler but still angry enough to invade other countries? we could even put some german mussolini or something there instead, who might love to invade poland, but maybe would not be I'M A JUGGALO WOOP WOOP enough to think the place ought to be populated by german farmers and everyone else must die. still fascist, but not so evil tens of millions of deaths would be seen as a great victory in any way

and seems no one answered the point that while a nonviolent resistance needs a critical mass to be effective, so does an aggressive resistance

"yeah you need an invading army of millions" - well you know in order to be honest you should compare that to a nonviolent resistance of similar numbers. what if you had millions of organised pacifists at home? i don't see why they would be doomed to failure

indeed, in a recent example, the resistance in syria turned to shit pretty much the minute some guys came and took up arms, because they turned what was a nonviolent resistance of possibly enough numbers and in any case was easy to sympathise with, into a horribly outmatched violent resistance that also kills and scares people

ps i love how thanas thought that spoiler in testing actually happens in that avengers film. too bad though, it almost made me want to see it :sun:

nah he said something in the budget thread about menzies being the worst Australian government or something cause of Vietnam or some shit and then 'oh yeah and Whitlam' and they're both terrible examples in just about every way

I dunno dude it's a minor nitpick but at the same time symbolic of everything he posts that is related to politics or aus

Doctors are good at what they do but this doesn't make them experts in everything, same as engineers.

My father is a surgeon, but I can't begin to tell you the amount of times he's done things in daily life that comes across as preposterously stupid or risky. And yet when he's at work, he plays by the rules of the house and his training an experience. Just like any professional, really.
