I haven't seen Red Tails and I honestly didn't think Indy 4 was so terrible, so I really don't know what you're talking about Veef. I know some people give Lucas waaaaaay to much credit for the quality of the OT *coughcough*Elfdart*coughcough* but He isn't as terrible as some of the "raped my childhood" brigade make him out to be. He's certainly better than say, Micheal Bay or Roland Emmerich

Being better than the two most infamous hacks of our generation is not a sterling accomplishment for an artist.

...

Well, I guess Brett Ratner is more infamous than Roland, but NEVERTHELESS.

if we could let go of the IP we could make new stories

with new characters and settings

Well it's pretty obvious that George has shot his wad, so yeah time to retire.

I can certainly agree with that in regards to the post-ROTJ era, they seriously need to let Luke, Han, Leia, and everybody else fucking retire already. There's certainly room for more decent stories to come out of the SW universe, it's a big universe after all, but we all know they probably won't make them. The good stuff nowadays is mostly self-contained and small scale. That's why I'm kind of excited for that new game they previewed at E3. You're a bounty hunter, and supposedly the force, jedi, and sith don't factor in to it at all.

Michael Bay is amazing. I don't think he'll eclipse The Island, though.

On a relevant note, I nave never comprehended the "raped my childhood" complaints about Lucas. Did he get rid of your enjoyment for those films that you grew up with? Do you look back on those memories and hate them?

Star Wars was an indispensable event in pop culture and sci fi history

so much of the time after ROTJ was filled with nerds pioneering their own ideas trying to make their own Star Wars or to build on ideas they got from watching it

by the time it returned to the big screen, so much of it had been absorbed into thousands of other stories that the magic was lost

Lucas's inability to create good movies with the prequels squandered everything he had left

only the name keeps it going

See, I never saw the original cuts of the OT. The 2004 special editions were my first foray into the series. I personally never want to see the originals. And I'll keep defending his bukkake on film preservation to upset outraged fanboys.

For a lot of SW fans, myself included, the special edition re-release was the first time they saw SW on the big screen. They made a powerful impression

I was in basic training and one of the dude's in my platoon's mom died or something and he went home for like a week. While there, he saw the re-release of ep. 4 and when he got back everyone wanted to hear about it. the only thing he could remember were explosion rings. We were all very disappointed.

man I should probably get around to watching TESB some time
or even the whole of RotJ (i've seen the end at endor, but not the beginning)

-Alternatively, "Empire" and "Jedi" are acceptable. I'll even take ep.5 and ep.6 . 2 and 3 remind me of prequels and that's a bad thing. don't make me abuse my power again.

When did the special shit come out. I remember we all went off base in 99 for TPM but I'm not a fan of the SE.

I only remember when I saw TPM because we went when I was in Charleston for my grandmother's funeral and my parents wanted to distract my cousin, my sister, and myself from the fact that she had died and they wanted us out of the way whilst they were finishing up preparations for the funeral and wake. We went to view the body before the wake after the movie on our way back to her house, suffice to say that was not a good day when you're a ten year old.
