i was just watching some news and they were talking about fining big banks like a hundred million pounds

but when you're a trillionaire a hundred million pounds might not be a hit



so i was thinking what if fines were defined as a percentage of your income? let's say fraud hits you with 10%

if a poor person defrauds someone his punitive fine is like $1000, which he'd feel cuz he's poor but is laughably low to a big bank

and if a big bank defrauds someone its punitive fine is like $100,000,000,000 which they might feel too



it seems like a good idea to me but it is so simple surely somoene has done it or else it sucks

it's about a week off the anniversary of black friday, the tornado that came through edmonton in 87 and killed 27 people, injured 300+ and destroyed 300 homes

which was the worst disaster in modern alberta history and one of the worst in canadian history

i never saw it, since it was a year before i was born

but my grandma called me from windsor ON to make sure i was home safe and told me to go sit in the basement

meanwhile, there are gigantic fuckin' holes in airport security that nobody does shit about because while you can inconvenience passengers and they'll eat shit, closing holes on the other end would tear airport operations apart across most of the us (if detroit is representative, and detroit is a good-sized airport), seriously hurt the airlines, and generally cause more problems than they would really solve

nobody gives a damn because this isn't about security, this is about appearances
