Testing Chat Thread
Re: Testing Chat Thread
I don't know know any religious people who are I'M A JUGGALO WOOP WOOP about their religion or religion in general, and most religious people I know are fairly intelligent.
Though there may be some sort of selective bias at work there
The only people I know who tend to be I'M A JUGGALO WOOP WOOP about religion in general would be the Atheists.

And I should add "and they tend to be pretty tolerant".Oxymoron wrote: [...]and most religious people I know are fairly intelligent.
But that may be because most religious people I know are muslims, who are in large majority second or third generation "immigrants" (they're French, it's just that their ancestors were not).
And by the way, I'll note that if I know a lot of practicing muslims (almost all "Arabs" you can encounter in the street are practicing muslims, to diverse degrees), I don't know a lot of Christians, strangely enough. I mean, most people may have some kind of faint belief in God or in some kind of supernatural force, but I don't know many self-identified "Christians" (be it Catholic or Protestant).

That's true.Zod wrote:You're also not American.
My sister, who's currently living in Florida with her husband (her husband and her are practicing Catholics, by the way), has been, well, shocked in several occasions when people casually said to her things like "god bless" and such during normal conversations.
It's strange for us to see religion being seen as something you should be proud to show to others, instead of just an intimate, personal belief that's your own business an noone else's.

Well, from what she tells us, Gainesville doesn't strike me as the worst place to be in the US.

Re: Testing Chat Thread
Gainesville's nice, if a little...okay...really slow. It's certainly not a bustling metropolis, but then few non-urban college towns are.
Florida ain't the worst place to live. Weather's good, cost of living is reasonable, and intelligent people are more abundant than you might imagine. The steepest learning curve to living in FL is learning what places to avoid, but I imagine that's pretty good as a general rule anywhere you go.

I've still got it, but the job I have is very dependent on which manager is running the kitchen.joviwan wrote:Do you not still have that awesome job you liked so much?
Part of washing dishes is that it comes in waves. So if you work quickly, you get a few minutes of downtime between waves of plates.
When we get a hands off manager, it's an awesome job. When we get the hands on guy, who has been on all week, it's a lot of busywork when it looks like we've finished early. Having the hands on manager leads to lots of making things look like work, lest we get sent on a twenty minute task that makes dishes pile up. *grumble*

To be fair they're probably right. OWS never really got anything done and even now the popular perception is that it was composed entirely of hippie english majors who were pissed that their worthless degree didn't entitle them to a job or something. It might still be around, but I doubt it's doing anything important.

Also, I love that map :
Now why would they be nervous, look at all the freedom around them!
what a shitty map
This map is shitty because blue on any map that includes water is confusing. There's a pretty universal first assumption that blue = water on a map.
Other aspects of the map not withstanding, such as the rational behind which bases get labels...

Even when I supported them I found some of it hilarious. Take the entire picture thing. "I have a masters degree and I can't find a job." A LOT of those people withheld their major. Perhaps because they knew it wasn't marketable?Darksi4190 wrote:To be fair they're probably right. But yes. It is dead. I recall telling a friend that after the winter they'd disappear. They may be back momentarily, but their message is dead. No one important cares, if they cared at all outside of the brutality and arrests.
