i like ff8 a lot

i'm prolly a heretic for this but i'd put it at #2 in the series, maybe 3 if you count ff tactics in the group. (that is among the ones I've played. I just got a playstation two like a week ago and still haven't played it yet, so 9 is as new as i've been, and i skipped 2,3 and 5. but i saw my brother play some of ff5 and ff10 so i pretty much know what's going on with it)


but yeah i know it's flaws

and i'm ok with them. i liked the story, i liked junctioning, the music is, as always, splendid, and the game is just fucking beautiful if you ask me.

well, in terms of the combat actually making all the options useful, then it's well-designed, although it's not as action-oriented

but the overall setup is go to here for more stupid plot

lament that of all games, this is one of the few to actually treat its gay characters for respect

see that the sequel will involve "chrono trigger-style time travel" and weep for the future

have a boss fight that makes no sense and reveals entire party to have sold their brains for petty cash

return it to store

there's also an incredible amount of foreshadowing and tiny details that go along with that- like, did you know that squall has special limit break animations for a whole bunch of bosses? like, for the big cactuar he jumps up on its shoulder to stab it in the face. and there's selphie's blog, and the fact that seifer holds his gunblade like laguna does in the flashback with the dragon...

but most people never see any of that so it's ultimecia lol.

(but also, the TEO tendency to label people as virgins is pretty funny, as if sex is some complicated ritual of achievement which imparts you with great wisdom, as opposed to something any stupid white trash do every day. it's almost like teh sex magickkk of them crowley weirdoes)

buffs and such were perfectly useful in older FFs

they just didn't place nearly as much emphasis on them

On Ultimecia though, I'm going to sound like Jim Raynor here, but I think a lot of fans missed a lot about her. One complaint I've heard is that she just shows up out of nowhere at the end, so we know nothing about her... but, that's not true. We meet her in Edea's body fairly early on, and we do learn about her through those actions and dialog.

Pretty ridiculous dialog, but we do see her. Then, we can take what we know about her character along with what we know about what Ellone is trying to do, the time loop idea, and the background details throughout the game to get an idea of how Ultimecia grew up and why she feels the way she does.

A lot of people don't like her, but I say she's one of the more interesting villains in the series.


PS Triple Triad is boss too.

i think it's the bait and switch people didn't like

in the older ffs it's pretty clear who your main badguy is pretty early on and it stays consistent

in 8 you think it's going to be edea, then ultimecia comes along

i think ff9 was a little bit worse about this but its been awhile since i played it all the way through

I've kinda settled into a style of half truth and half exaggeration in most my posts.

What I find weird is where they call things trolling. The repeated stupid, unprovoked flames: that's troll shit. Saying RLM is an example of a review style I, and other reviewers like? That was meant to be legitimate.


(I, in total seriousness, think Raynor has a sexist streak in him. Yeah, I trolled a bit when calling him that way back on the first page, but I believe it too. I didn't go out of my way to watch Nostaliga Chick videos to troll... I actually enjoy them (and meant to give objective proof if he bothered to check the timestamp on my Facebook comment). It's just pure coincidence that she mentioned RLM in a recent video and I happened to remember it.)

FF8 probably suffers most from being too subtle. The villain lays out a major clue to her motivations early on in the game, but it doesn't repeat it over and over and you rarely have direct contact with her until she's gone again. Seifer's motivations are also there, but they're mostly in the background. Basically, if you replay FF8 with the ending fresh in your mind (or spend hours thinking about it lol) and explore a bit, it clicks and suddenly the entire plot makes sense (as long as you buy squall and rinoa falling for each other). But most people aren't going to do that.

As for the villain, she's still a step up from Sephiroth, who has no discernible motivation beyond being crazy with worse lines than Kefka got.

it's great for the first disc but the second-disc is cutscene city

Like Garland in the first one?

I haven't really played any Final Fantasy games, but I was under the impression that trying (successfully or not) to build up someone as the big bad guy before having them stabbed in the back and deposed by the real bad guy was fairly common in them.

I only played 9 once, and it was back right after I got it, so long time ago now. (I've actually been meaning to play it again... but I don't do much video gaming at all anymore, especially not a 20 hour beast.)

But, the final boss definitely came out of nowhere. I read someone somewhere on the internet saying it was supposed to be a metaphor fight - it represented Zidane's inner demons or something. I remember the game kinda pointing at this - there was that Yoda quote about fear leading to anger and shit right before the fight.

Definitely weird though.


As to the main villain, ff9 was iirc consistent with Kuja being the face of things all the way through.

"Son of a submariner" is the greatest putdown line in the history of putdown lines, you spoony bard.

Did FF6 ever get one of those "fan translations" of 'what it was supposed to be' which means put a bunch of curse words in because it makes people look cool or something?

Well, that phrased it poorly- I meant to say that Sephiroth has, at best, all the depth and characterization of Kefka without the good lines.

Oh, no, what it got was a translation which called Kefka "Cefca" and cut out all the cool lines that make people like Kefka. I think it might have had some swears but I'm not sure. Basically the only good fan translation is the one for Mother 3, because it was a professional doing it because he loved the game.

The guy doing the translations for Square SNES was awesome.

He believed in localizations over translations - a difference the brilliant Working Designs introduced to me.

Translation: given a line, figure out what it was saying and rewrite it in English

Localization: given a story or a character, make it work for an American audience
