most of the estimates i've seen online range from 200-800$, and the 800$ ones are for really high-end services for very large properties.

Have you tried digging up some patches and resoiling them? Or maybe putting in grass plugs in the bare spots?Darksi4190 wrote:We've done that ourselves before and the new stuff either comes in patchy, doesn't come in at all, or gets overtaken and killed by weeds within a year. We put down fertilizer and weedkiller every year, and it doesn't help. Obviously we're doing something wrong, because the grass just keeps dying or getting overtaken by weeds.
It might be time for a professional touch.

No. Most of what we've done has been to dig up the dead spots, clear the shit, put down black dirt, and plant seeds.
According to my mom, we have a problem with both grubs and voles, so before we do anything we need to put down something to kill those.
I don't have work or school tomorrow, so if it doesn't rain too hard, i'm going to call companies up for estimates. No harm in getting an estimate done as long as you don't commit to anything.

Either way we've got to do something. Our lawn's been degrading fairly steadily for the past eight years, and we've tried to do some stuff to fix it, but we always put off doing something more substantial because she was busy with work and I was busy with work and school. Now we can't put it off any longer because the neighbors are going to call the city and have us ticketed.
The house is really just too big for mom and me to handle alone, and to be honest, while I was still in grades K-12, I didn't really do enough to help out. I've been getting better about taking care of the lawn, but it's really just reached the point where mom and I can't handle stuff alone anymore. Shit keeps breaking or going bad, and it's getting tougher to find the money to fix it.
We're fixing up the lawn and painting this summer, and that's the first step towards making the house look good for potential buyers.

Are the same spots consistently dying or does it change up? If it's the same spots, you could replace those parts of your lawn with something else, whether just rock patches or a shrub or a garden or whatever you're up to maintaining.

Also, is it over the septic tank?

It's all over the place really. It probably started getting patchy about six or seven years ago, right after I graduated High School, then the patchy parts started getting larger and larger, and now there's this huge patch where it's pretty much entirely dead.Infinity Biscuit wrote:Are the same spots consistently dying or does it change up? I'm not entirely sure where the septic tank is. I'll have to figure that out and get back to you. Mom and I both think it's some sort of burrowing creature digging tunnels and shit. Every once and a while a giant hole will collapse in the yard or one of us will step on a tunneled out section and lose our footing. There's definitely something going on underground back there.Flagg wrote:Also, is it over the septic tank?

Patches like that can occur because all the water is draining into a forming sinkhole...
Where about do you live? Are sinkholes common in your area?

There have been a couple in the area.
Now you've got me worried. Is there a good way to check and see if a sinkhole is forming?

Only getting somebody qualified to have a look at it, but I'm not having much success finding out who that should actually be in your area.Darksi4190 wrote: Is there a good way to check and see if a sinkhole is forming?
EDIT: Have you had anything else that might be a sign? Water pooling where it didn't before, leaning fence posts, doors that stop closing properly, those kind of things? How close is the patch to the house?

can't recall seeing any of those other signs, but i'll look in to getting someone to check the yard out.
The dead patches aren't close to the house yet, so that's something.

Tomorrow will be the 20th anniversary of the end of the Waco Siege, according to wikipedia.
And it's the same Waco.
