i was just watching a thing about ancient greek warfare and they said they held spears overarm

a few weeks ago, i watched this youtube guy say it makes more sense to hold it underarm cuz you get more length out of the spear that way

i think the youtube guy made a pretty strong argument. his counter to the common knowledge is that the overarm looked better in art, so that's what they painted for dramatic purposes, but in practice they'd surely prefer the range advantage that full extension can give

so that makes me think, what if historians 2000 years from now are trying to determine details about warfare based on what surviving movies they have?

"20th century soldiers were armed with an assault rifle that they typically fired from the hip. when it ran out of ammunition (after about one minute of steady firing on full auto), they'd drop the rifle and draw two pistols, one in each hand..."

Man, reading shit like this does not help my anxiety.

I get headaches and ear aches all the time. They could be in my head right now. Eating my brain and I wouldn't even know it. I'd never even know it

never know it.

at all.

That's it. I'm making an appointment with an ear nose, and throat doctor as soon as I fucking can. I have enough trouble sleeping already.

No but once the idea sticks in my head there's no way to stop it, so it's either go to a doctor who will make sure there's nothing in my head or got to a shrink and get treated for an anxiety disorder and I don't have time for the latter.

They already tried nuking the rift in the past, but it didn't work then. The only reason why the Marshal gave the order to try once again was because the UN had decided to shut down down the whole Jaeger program. Him giving the order for this mission, just after having lost two jaegers in a battle to defend Hong Kong, was basically one last fuck you to both the Kaiju and the UN ("Today, to the edge of our hope [...] we are cancelling the Apocalypse !").

The only reason why nuking the rift worked this time and not before, was because one of the scientist was insane enough to "drift" (the term used for the memory binding thing Jaeger pilots do) with the brain of a Kaiju, and discovered why it didn't work the first time : the rift, a device created by the aliens on the other side using the kaiju as living weapons against Earth, scan what transit through it, and only let things bearing the "signature" of a kaiju through. As the first bomb didn't bear that signature, it got rejected.

So this time they had a battle against kaijus just around / over the rift, gipsy danger took one in its embrace, dragging it with itself through the rift, and on the other side detonated its own nuclear reactor, closing the rift.
Short answer : they tried nuking it already, it didn't work then, and only worked in the end through a plot miracle.
I saw Pacific Rim and enjoyed it for what it was, with the characterisation (while cliché and mechanical) did not drag things down as much as I feared (when there's lots of interesting things happening in the background and some fascinating world building).

The ticket price was shocking though.
Not only was it a heavy pastiche of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Clovefield, the ending where the hero rode down in his Jager, past the mouth of the portal and set off his Jager's nuclear reactor inside the weird Kaiju breeding facility on the other side was very reminiscent of how the other alien invaders were defeated in Independence Day and The Avengers (with a big nuke set off within the alien invasion force's main supply depot, while aliens dumbly look on).

That stupid Pacific Wall thing was a poorly thought through and implemented boondoggle, likely intended as a morale boosting placebo for the populace that could never be fully completed or work effectively.

Owen from Torchwood was doing a strong impression of Matt Smith's Doctor while his sidekick (who dissected Kaiju) was Dr. Niko Tatopoulos 2.0.

wikipedia tells me that platypi is incorrect because platypus actually comes from the greek and that the proper plural is platypodes

but I dunno, never knew that. Another reason why South Australia is the ghetto of reasonable STRAYA.

It's Greek. The proper plural is platypodes.
