I thought I liked it, but I found out I was more interested in story-potential rather than numbers, and apparently that's just unacceptable.

It's amusing to watch adr troll the shit out of the Wars side.

But really, the only worthwhile VS I ever saw was Silver Age Superman vs Bugs Bunny. Pretty sure SDN managed to ruin it, but at least the concept is kinda amusing.

Story and characters are insignificant next to the Power of the Petatons. :ugeek:

dude

he said 'use stuff from not shit games to rationalise btech numbers'

this is the guy who can post giant reams of made-up shit baout how btech ablative armour actually representst the huge level of accuracy needed to hit the tiny weakpoints on invincible battlemechs

the thread was two pages of people saying 'yeah other robot games have better controls'

but his rationale for making a modern game is 'to make my fanfic legit'

dat post said this and more

Anyway, digression aside, I think there is some truth to the notion that the most recent cRPGs have been unduly dumbed down. The answer is, I think, not all that surprising: there's been a paradigm shift in the latest generation of gamers, spurred along by consoles and WoW, and it's one that won't necessarily entice the older generation. Previously, games demanded an investment in time.

well some of what people mean when they say 'dumbed down from 1998' is actually stuff that's really good

like me's combat vs buck rogers combat and shit

but frankly i put the blame squarely on whining forum nerds :V

man that post is gold

'all this stuff not related to stories beign weak-ass wish fulfillment for fatties'

seriously can you make a thread on sdn that people don't just dump their own personal agenda into

look, i think part of why they became wish fulfillment is because of changes in the industry and the increasing amount of money at stake

kinda like how a lot of blockbusters have really nothing challenging in them at all

So last week I got interviewed for an article, and part of that wound up here: http://www.cjr.org/campaign_desk/cjr_ho ... braska.php

I got misquoted a bit so one of my sentences seems nonsensical to me but meh.

but consolification is ridiculous

meh i shouldn't really get involved since i haven't played any new rpgs since like 1999.

hell i've barely played any new games period since then. i think maybe ten?

but regardless even before then i played the japanese style rpgs which are pretty different than what thanas is talking about anyway

i did watch my brother play through kotor on the xbox and i've seen bits and pieces of assassins creed games on the playstation three but that's all i know

there's a fundamental distinction between western and japanese rpgs that is actually quite interesting from a fat nerd standpoint

how can someone who presumably poured through hundreds of PDFs (since he didn't even know what was in a legit 3025 TRO) in where all the robots are described as being better by literally how many tons of armor they have come to this conclusion

I seriously have no idea how people can believe that the the value of gold is any less arbitrary, well, anything else. Gold only had value because it was shiny and keeps for a long time; it always represented a purely imaginary and fluid value relative to local markets and the will of whatever warlord was having his face stamped on it this year.

We might as well do it the way they did in Feudal Japan and go by bundles of rice produced. At least a koku of rice has the rather inarguable value of, you know, keeping you alive for a year. That's a pretty real fucking value right there. But unless you're willing to go out to the rice paddies and pull yourself up by your bootstraps, how about you shut up about your stupid gold standard?
Smartest thing he's ever posted.
