Have fun spewing chunks of half-digested cookie matter all over the court.

I don't know enough about the situation in Malaysia to say anything on that specific topic, but refusal to assimilate can be racist depending on the context.

The way the Malay/Chinese situation is being framed, it sounds like the Chinese are economically better off despite being at a political disadvantage. If that is the case, the Chinese refusal to assimilate could be racist if it is done to prevent the Malays from sharing in their economic prosperity.

I mean, if a gated white neighborhood was founded in the middle of a traditionally black or hispanic area, we'd be justified in calling the neighborhood racist if the residents went out of their way to avoid supporting any of the businesses in the surrounding area. Something like that would be a case of refusal to assimilate being racist.
The thing that occurs to me when we talk about chinese collectively being economically better off is someone can always start going on about poorer lower-income chinese who have to make do with whatever they have without any of the advantages offered by the ruling government to similarly poor malays. But that in a way to me sounds similar to in the American case saying you cannot refute affirmative action by bringing up the fact that there are poor white people as well.

I recently found a blog post by a well spoken(in english) Malay*** who was ranting because the residents association of her neighborhood, which was 85% chinese, decided to conduct the meeting in mandarin*. And this is not because they can't speak english or malay, there is no way you get to live in a place of that status and not be conversant in english and malay - they just didn't choose to! And then I can understand why they would be incredibly angry that this happens.

*This is perhaps on of those things that maybe people from countries other than english speaking ones can appreciate. I'm sure everyone can tell a story of how they awkwardly were in a meeting where the attendees decided rather than use the one language everyone understands, use the language only part of the room understands and then go "oh sorry, we were saying <glossed over translation of what was said>"

**I think what ticks people off of course is that this is a meeting - no one cares if you want to speak whatever you want at home or some informal setting. And it is especially so when none of them have the excuse they don't know english or malay. We're not talking fresh of the boat 1st gen immigrants here. We are 3rd or 4th gen who are in some ways trying to have our cake and eat it too. Also consider that when push comes to shove, when the topic of what the language of neutral discourse in Malaysia should be, rather than pick Malay, a language everyone understands, we pick English, a language everyone also understands, but is not the actual language of the land! Yay colonialism/globalization!

***I just realised pre-edit I said "well educated Malay" as if it was not the default for Malays to be "well educated". That's of course an interesting bias on my own part. And that's an interesting poser all to itself. There is also this kind of assumption that because a particular Malay wears a western suit and speaks good english and studied at Oxford he must therefore be a liberal and also be opposed to all the things we(non-malays) consider regressive about malay/islamic culture****. This is of course nonsense and probably insulting to boot.

**** consider how the western media portrays Anwar Ibrahim, the opposition leader when they portray him. Some sort of urbane, sophisticated western liberal leader. That is...politely, not accurate. More crudely, it's BS. He's a chameleon and a hypocrite. But he's still the best chance we have at regime change so...

This is starting to turn into me venting all my unsaid frustrations at the contradictions of malaysian society. if i should just start a new thread do let me know :)

Soooo my big sister called a little while ago to say not to worry, but(!) our mother has had some kind of episode and be prepared to fly up there at short notice. She'll call me later to update.

After the initial shock and worry wore off I realised I'm not feeling anything. What does that even mean?

It means you are normal and handling it in a healthy way

There's no point feeling stuff until you have enough information to feel at right stuff

That's true. But I can't help feel a as though because of that, the sisters might not give me the full skinny. Siobhan called me back about an hour ago and the story now is they've arrived on the scene and discovered a laundry full of bloody bed linen, mattress suggests this has been going on a while. Apparently a hysterectomy's going to be happening soonish, though my dad(whom neither the mother or sisters talk to any longer) tells me that the local hospital wouldn't handle a case like that and it would go to an oncology specialist in either Newcastle or Sydney.

So shit might be getting a bit real.

I actually thought Cordelia was really annoying during her seasons on Buffy, but got much better when they advanced her character arc on Angel.

Actually come to think of it it's the same with Wesley too.

Angel was really much better at making certain characters likable than Buffy.

Quite frankly Angel was the better show overall. It started stronger because Whedon had already ironed out the setting with the first few seasons of Buffy, and it got cancelled before it could become stale, as opposed to practically any Buffy episode after "The Gift."

Plus with Angel Whedon actually broke his "no guns" rule and had Wes pull out a shotgun every now and then which was awesome.

Well... it's true.

Have you ever had sex while firing a machine gun? It's like having an orgasm every time you pull the trigger.

Followed by actual orgasms.

So there didn't seem to be anything wrong with that tuna pasta bake
BUT APPARENTLY THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT

I'm putting that one in my Top 5 Worst Poos Of All Time

On the bright side, all this feeling sick and not sleeping has led to an awesome Red Dwarf marathon

Still, if I'd planned this, I probably would rather have done it on a Tuesday night, not a Saturday
adr rox worship him or suffer large
and so forth, etc.
