meh is it really any worse than spending huge amounts of money on video games and movies? they're both just entertainment

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
so I just saw this on the internet
and I don't think it makes much sense. couldn't a dictator say the very same thing when he executes some pro-democracy protester?Wil Wheaton @wilw 28 Dec
Please learn and understand the difference between freedom of speech, and freedom from consequences. Thanks so much

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
Yeah, but this doesn't make it any less valid when some kind of racist/sexist/whatever-ist shithead start spewing shit and then comes whining about "freedom of speech" when people start calling them on their bullshit.
Also, I don't know how it is in the US, what with the 1st-amendment and all, but here to publicly say things to provoke hate or which could lead to violence is an offense.
Also, one word: harassment.

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
harassment is a different issue cuz it is more individualized. if a public asshole was saying like "all communists should die" every single day on the radio that's not harassment whereas if he went to someone's house said "you should die, communist" I think that crosses the line
same with calling out vs other things. fighting speech with speech is cool but what about firing someone from their job? I think that potentially crosses a line, it lets the company owners shape the message... (legally btw the first amendment doesn't apply to private persons and companies firing each other but the concept should)
* * *
so futurama is on right now and I got a good lol cuz they were fighting to the death and "choose your weapon"
and there was totally a lirpa there!!!!!!!!!!!! and they didn't even have to call it out and explain the joke. then they did a few seconds of the "national anthem" and it was the great amok time fight music, amazing, I lol'd and they still didn't explain it. good stuff

Re: Testing Chat V: The Final Mysterious Island: Miami Beach
The only difference between those two cases is that in one the guy on the radio is basically asking other people to do what the second guy did. So that's even worse in my opinion.adr wrote:harassment is a different issue cuz it is more individualized. if a public asshole was saying like "all communists should die" every single day on the radio that's not harassment whereas if he went to someone's house said "you should die, communist" I think that crosses the line
As for the "firing someone from their job" bit, I'm not sure I see how it is relevant there, as you cannot fire people for their opinions anyway, but for only for things they actually do. I heard there's a thing called "workers' rights", it seems related.

Nice: "I have a 60% discount on a cutlery set so I'll buy you one"
Less nice: "It's not like you'll find a girl with her own cutlery anyway"
thanks mom

You know, when I first saw the username and before I went to check the earlier pages of the thread,
I wondered if it wasn't Chocs
And yeah. It wasn't him.

i'm kinda broke right now. barely breaking even month to month and it is starting to piss me off/
so what the hell, i'll apply for a new job. "attach your resume"
lol, why do they even ask for those? "please lie to us about your qualifications, exaggerate your positive attributes, and omit your negative stuff"
i'll sum that up in one sentence "i won't waste your time with a resume"
and what the fuck is a cover letter anyway? <font color="scarlet">A</font> how's that for a cover letter
methinks i won't be getting a call back

This is why you can't find work, adr. Dismissing the value of a resume is awesome. Not knowing that your negative attributes will be discussed in the interview is even more amazing.

First Amendment protects you from government reprisal for most forms of speech and that's it. It's in no way absolute (yelling "fire" in a crowded theater for example). What it doesn't do is protect you from legal reprisal by say, your employer if what you're saying can cause them harm.Oxymoron wrote:Yeah, but this doesn't make it any less valid when some kind of racist/sexist/whatever-ist shithead start spewing shit and then comes whining about "freedom of speech" when people start calling them on their bullshit.

And the biggest fuckwits in RW media know this full well. I didn't see that shit eating cunt Palin defending the "right" of Martin Bashir to say mean things about her on TV.

My favorite is the one she made in the Schumacher thread where she stated the obvious about dealing with brain injuries.Gands wrote:http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... 6#p3814486
