Hmmmm, I think that applies more to his Hellboy movies. Blade II was workmanlike action horror (it was better than Blase: Trinity, but that's not a hard thing to do).
Hellboy was more inventive than Pacific Rim Job. A better world was established.
Hellboys world was established in the comics which are worse than the movies which I kinda liked.

Big O thanks for recommending Wolf Children, I've just finished watching it and it was fantastic
it went from cute to sweet to bittersweet
'and then I peed on it to show it who's boss'
it was a perfect example of what animation can do better than any other medium, what with the transformations and so on

Perhaps, but part of why the Hellboy movies don't do much for me is partially Ron Pearlman (who is better as a hulking, nutty side character instead of the lead role). Pacific Rim's setting is not original, but the interdimensional monster factory churning out skyscraper sized monsters to invade Earth has more merit to it than French nuclear testing affecting iguana lizards. :frogs:

my book's first draft is (finally!) half done so they officially put it on the website as a coming soon title

http://www.packtpub.com/discover-advant ... kbook/book

looks like we might be keeping the provisional title.... but at least they spruced up the marketing text a bit. i had to write the first draft of that too and i'm like the worst at selling stuff
my first draft of the marketing blurb wrote: "a boring disorganized book that doesn't say anything i don't already know. i wouldn't spend that much money on it"
but i've been told that i was doing it wrong

I don't understand why papers full of gibberish are that controversial

I mean have you read a prominent journal of law? That's all nonsense and it's great. :v

so like basically performance measurement is bullshit

yknow i think this is the topic of chris hayes' book on meritocracy and the twilight of the elites or whatever it was called

i never read it

but i watched him talk about it for ten minutes one time and he seemed on point. the idea is people will min/max the stats you measure. and the bigger the reward the bigger the incentive to just cheat

So, Ukraine...

Strangely enough, I'm already seeing internet Neo-cons saying "they're not part of NATO so fuck'em, we don't want another war".

I was already seeing some parallels with the ongoing economic crisis, but this shit gives me even more the impression that we are reliving the 1930's...

It's got a lot of parallels except the Crimea was given to Ukraine by Khrushchev in the 50's. So the Russian federation does have a territorial claim. Now if nuHitler goes for half of Ukraine...

Who should I be supporting re the Ukrainian debacle? I don't support armed conflict by protesters, and I've read that a lot of the protesters are fascists, so seeing them squashed wouldn't be a bad thing.

The Russians will always say the protesters are fascists because all bad things ever were done by fascists.

On one side you have the people of western Ukraine who want to join the EU, on the other side the people of Eastern Ukraine who want to be with Russia. There isn't really a 'side' to pick; it's like a messy divorce with tanks.

If protesters aren't willing to resort to armed conflict, what use are they? You end up with a bunch of pussaholics like OWS or dead kids like Tianimen square.
