His Death Knell review was rather good too. Considering both of them could have been bogged down a lot more by being season 6 and 7 reviews of a series he's only done earl episodes of until recently.

OK, last night I stayed up too late watching two movies dripping in early to mid 1990s cheese, Sudden Death and Demolition Man.

Sudden Death is very typical of the post-Die Hard movies where a charismatic scenery chewing mastermind (in this case Powers Boothe) and his cadre of mercenaries armed with MP5s/UZIs seize control of an everyday location (in this case an ice hockey stadium) to stage an elaborate high tech heist. The implausible mix of North American sports and bone crunching, head splitting violence reminds me of The Last Boy Scout.

Demolition Man is similar to Robocop and Total Recall, but with the violence toned down somewhat and the humour raised a few notches, and with the movie still fresh in my mind I'm hit by how much it accurately predicted the near future to a surprising degree (even though the ice prison and a war torn LA of 1996 is a load of old tosh) with fibre optic communications, tablet and pocket computers, self-driving cars, CCTV everywhere (including cameras set over computer monitors), Skype, the internet being everywhere, and adults remaining somewhat childlike well into their twenties and thirties. Even the still far fetched alternate 1996 LA is somewhat closer to home now when we see American law enforcement on the news in the past ten years, with LAPD officers being more militarised and going about in military surplus vehicles.

I think the director explained how he thought they worked, but that was just his interpretation.

Demolition Man is the shit. Is it an action movie, a comedy, a dystopian SF epic, a clever social commentary? Why not all of them!

so i watched "frozen" today

and i absolutely loved it
when it started i mockingly said "and it'll turn out this guy is an entitled asshole and then she'll learn that she doesn't need men"

....and to my surprise, the movie actually DID go that direction! not exactly, it didn't go quite as far as i would, but wow i was genuinely surprised that they didn't do the whole "true love kiss" nonsense, it was awesome
the friend with whom i watched it said she thought it dropped the ball and didn't adequately develop the characters and while in part i agree... but it didn't bother me, perhaps i'm just super forgiving cuz of the parts i liked

so the same friend was also saying i wouldnt' love it cuz it isn't political enough (we watched "the hunger games: catching fire" a couple weeks ago and i was cheering for the revolution the whole time)

she redid the song "you wanna build a snowman" as "you wanna build a corrupt country.... stealing money from the poor". i lol'd

but actually i loved the movie because it WAS political. just a different kind of political

whelp i'm starting my new job today and i'm actually kinda nervous on a couple levels. it is a new technology to me, and obviously new people and new requirements, a lot of stuff i don't even know yet like what their schedule expectations are, exactly how they want to communicate, etc.

i'm an independent contractor on paper so it shouldn't be too much different than what i'm used to but blargh. i'd hate to get fired on day one

I actually did. Spent a couple hours over the weekend reproducing most their existing features so it wouldn't be too much of a step backward and ran benchmarks. It was 3x faster than the old site, a noticible difference even under no load.... without even putting any effort into speed. (Ruby is /that/ slow.) Fairly decent case so I went ahead and asked.

He said no because "the pros don't outweigh the cons". Programmers are a really conservative bunch though, doubly so if they get titled CTO; if I was in his place, I wouldn't want to change things either, especially on the suggestion of the new guy,

but whatever, for $76,800/year, I'll shut up and do it their way. Yeah, you read that right, that's more than twice as much as I was making when I considered myself rich a couple years ago. Holy crap. I'm still expecting the paychecks to not actually show up, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, but everything looks legit.... I'll know in a few weeks if the money will actually be in the bank or not. If it is, oh boy my debt is going to be gone so fast.

definitely, here let you share something i read recently that was amazing
Alma 24 wrote: 18 And this they did, it being in their view a testimony to God, and also to men, that they never would use weapons again for the shedding of man’s blood; and this they did, vouching and covenanting with God, that rather than shed the blood of their brethren they would give up their own lives; and rather than take away from a brother they would give unto him; and rather than spend their days in idleness they would labor abundantly with their hands.

19 And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace.

20 And it came to pass that their brethren, the Lamanites, made preparations for war, and came up to the land of Nephi for the purpose of destroying the king, and to place another in his stead, and also of destroying the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi out of the land.

21 Now when the people saw that they were coming against them they went out to meet them, and prostrated themselves before them to the earth, and began to call on the name of the Lord; and thus they were in this attitude when the Lamanites began to fall upon them, and began to slay them with the sword.

22 And thus without meeting any resistance, they did slay a thousand and five of them; and we know that they are blessed, for they have gone to dwell with their God.

23 Now when the Lamanites saw that their brethren would not flee from the sword, neither would they turn aside to the right hand or to the left, but that they would lie down and perish, and praised God even in the very act of perishing under the sword—

24 Now when the Lamanites saw this they did forbear from slaying them; and there were many whose hearts had swollen in them for those of their brethren who had fallen under the sword, for they repented of the things which they had done.

25 And it came to pass that they threw down their weapons of war, and they would not take them again, for they were stung for the murders which they had committed; and they came down even as their brethren, relying upon the mercies of those whose arms were lifted to slay them.

26 And it came to pass that the people of God were joined that day by more than the number who had been slain; and those who had been slain were righteous people, therefore we have no reason to doubt but what they were saved.
My heroes!

so then in general conference this weekend one of the speakers was talking about the commandment against killing and i started to get excited

would he call on Saints across the world to bury all weapons of war for peace?!

.... nope, he only wanted to talk about abortion :(

I think it'd be fun to have a STGOD here.

If only because I want to give my space nomads some proper development.

It's not the same thing, but I've toyed with the idea of trying to get a game of Microscope going here
basically it's a world-building game, where each person takes turns adding new elements (either eras, events, or scenes (which could even allow for people to put in short stories)) onto a timeline
I think we'd need at least four people who are interested, but the nature of it would allow people to drop in and out fairly easily, so I think it would be suited to this forum
anyone interested?
