My friend Heath told me that Close Quarters is the Shit. No sniper bullshit, no vehicle rape.
So, I just got back from my quarterly trip to meet up with my dad for lunch (I am aware of how stupid this is from most respects, he and I have decided that this is something we need to do to maintain our intercontinental relationship.), and boy did I have an adventure this time.
Everything went perfectly right up until the moment I boarded my return flight to DC. As soon as we had finished boarding, the crew announced that there was freezing rain and that the flight would be delayed at least 2 hours. As this was my entire margin for error on the connection, I started to have a bad feeling at this point, because I would now have to try to get a hotel room in Washington, D.C. for the night before the presidential inaugeration, and then try to get rebooked on to a flight out on the day of.
Naturally, the flight was eventually cancelled (along with another 163 flights) when the airport closed. I eventually found a hotel in Mainz and got there to get a few hours rest before having to try again today. Then, this morning (German time) I get downstairs in the hotel and find out that the cab company can't get anyone over there in time to have me at the airport when I need to be. <headdesk>
Eventually, the desk clerk suggests that instead of waiting for the cab, I could take the train to the station at the airport. After a moment of being annoyed with myself for not thinking of this the previous night when fighting for a cab with 100 other people, I got directions to the train station and went there.
Once I got to the airport and settled in, I was informed that my new flight (connecting in NYC this time) was also indefinitely delayed as the airplane had been diverted to Switzerland the previous night and was now stuck on the ground there. After an hour on the phone, I was finally able to get rebooked yet again onto the morning Lufthansa non-stop to LA.
