i took marksmanship as a class in high school for 2.5 years so i'm curious
it was about 15-20 years ago so i'm not entirely sure, but it was an actual class (in theory)

but i think this was before we found out my eyesight was completely shit and i started wearing glasses

I used the real stuff. FFg black powder.

Basically had to give it a quick field cleaning after every single battle, then a real cleaning when I got back home. Otherwise it'd misfire more often than not by Sunday.

Substitutes were not recommended in general, especially not in the group I ran with. If I remember correctly, it was a safety concern. We used caplocks, and the percussion caps don't always produce a big enough spark to ignite pyrodex.

So, about that whole pacifism thing, I have a counter-argument for you, adr.

Even Captain Picard had to lock phasers and fire sometimes. And Captain Picard is never evil.

WHAT NOW? :colbert:

when analyzing the holy scripture, it is important to remember that the word of god is delivered to us in many ways and indeed can even be interpreted differently by heretics than how it is correctly interperted

captain picard has a pure heart (lol) and a keen mind

but sometimes pure hearts and keen minds can make mistakes, so the question we have to ask is did the story present this as a good thing and did it work out well in the end

whoa i just had a philosophical epiphany

is an action right because captain picard does it?

is does captain picard do it because it is right?

Maybe you shouldn't base your morality on a tv show.

Well of course.

This is why we have The Sisko.

Better than basing it on some dusty old book. :troll:

I think that the Discourses on Livy were well-suited for Renaissance governments, but I don't think they'd apply all that well to the modern era.

How hard is it to clean out and otherwise maintain a black powder rifle? I've never owned one, but I've occasionally thought about getting a Hawken.

Bought the same as a regular one I find. The flintlock itself is rather annoying but it takes about the same amount of time.

Oh, you gotta make sure to get any powder residue out because it absorbs water, making rust an issue.

Same reason you don't see any more straight sci-fi about the jungles of Venus, or food pills, or anything else real scientists have actually tested and received negative results for: Science fiction fans tend to know a bit about actual science, and will be unable to take you seriously.

Man, if someone made a movie about the jungles of Venus today and it wasn't shitty, I'd enjoy it. I mean, shit, the only person who reasonably gets the science right, ever, is James Cameron, while most directors/writers/whatever tend to be liberal arts people and thus know approximately jack and shit about most science (not that that is really a personal failing, obviously).

Also, Her Majesty's Shithead pretty much came out and said that he hates everyone darker than alabaster.

I wonder if he's one of those BNP chucklefucks.

I would totally watch a show about jungle Venus. I wish I could remember the name of the novel I read about a naval war on Venus.
