But I could be wrong

As far as I know they give back directly to the government more than they perceive. I could be wrong, though.
Well y'know

As a group of wise and insightful political commentators once said

God save the queen
Cos tourists are money

They also have diplomatic uses, and I think there is some prestige or something attached to them, I suspect it's more fun to have a visit from the queen than some bland faceless suit and tie foreign secretary

also I know that prince andrew does a lot of lobbying for the british weapons industry, so there's that

really though, the best argument for the monarchy is the words 'president Cameron'

(also did you know David Cameron is technically banned from holding public office, becuase his family supported bonny prince charlie and fought at Culloden? True fact)

Now, ask me the same question about the Spanish Monarchy, then I'd say drop the fuckers. ¡ Viva la República ! ¡ Viva ! *left fist in the air*

I thought he was banned from office because he doesn't actual out have any sort of thinking meat in his skull

you know
I actually think dismissing your political opponents as idiots is always counter-productive
it's an easy way of feeling smug about doing nothing

It's much more satisfying to defeat someone who's been cultivating their political career and platforms their whole life, especially when you use their own politics to do it! Remember, stupidity in politics is very nearly always feigned.

Spain's a constitutional monarchy, but they have a different parliamentary system than the UK/Australia/Canada.

so apparently dc's new gay superhero is . . . alan scott?

guess they didn't want to rock the boat too much or something

not a very interesting choice

man what

i'm more concerned as to why they've apparently rebooted JSA so everyone's young again

Alan Scott was the cool-dad-with-a-power-ring

why's he in his twenties

OH WELL making him gay is something interesting they couldn't do with the character previously so at least that's something

and the writer emphasizes it's basically a new character in the old's outfit rather than OH YEAH BTW I'M GAY so that instantly makes it better than most gay comic characters i guess

also it's james robinson and his JSA stuff in the past has typically been worth reading

so i guess i will probably actually look at this

man that reminds me i still need to finish robinson's starman

Yes.

Basically the story goes like this :

In the 30's came the Second Republic. It was governed by Socialists and Communists, and followed the same kind of politic as the French "Front Populaire" (paid vacations, improvement of worker's rights, creation/improvement of the social safety net, etc..).

In 1936, the Fascists launched a Coup. The Spanish Civil War had begun and with the help of Hitler the Fascists finally took total control of the country in 1939.

From then one Franco's Dictatorship ruled the country until 1975. It ended shortly after the death of that son of a bitch, when the current King, Juan Carlos de Borbon (of the same family as Louis XIV & Cie), to whom the fascist had given transition powers, used said absolute powers to launch the country on the path of reform toward Democracy.

Since then the country is a "Unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy" (to use Wikipedia's formula).

Juan Carlos : I respect the man for having ended the Dictatorship, but as things stand his current legitimacy he hold it from the Fascists - Fascists which themselves toppled through illegitimate means the legitimate Republican regime at the time. Given the story of my family [1] I cannot then morally support the Spanish Monarchy.

[1] : Half my family is Spanish through my dad's side, my Grandpa and Grandma had to exil themselves in Dakar (Senegal) in order to live peacefully, because they were Republican. My Grandma's dad, a Communist deputy at the national parliament of the time, was him executed through a firing squad in the early hours of the Civil War because he fought during all his political career for the right of workers to live in decent conditions, his remains thrown into a well somewhere (to this day we still don't know where exactly AFAIK), to be forgotten forever.

Wouldn't Britain go for the separate head of state/head of government thing where there's both a Prime Minister and a President?

uraniun, almost certainly, and it'd be like germany where the post is purely ceremonial
I quite like the idea of choosing a random person out of the population to be king/queen for a few years though
I wouldn't even base it on citizenship, just anyone living here at the right time... maybe use the census or something.

ANYWAY
man, the hammer is a terrible person
apparently people become suicide bombers because 'lol fuck it'

It should be more like Publisher's Clearinghouse, except completely random. Dudes fling a dart at a map of the nation in question to land on a city, then they drive around until they find a house or apartment that an official "kingmaker" likes, they knock on the door, and the first person to answer who lives there is made the new monarch for arbitrary years.

we should solely hire comedians as powerless heads of state

then we can call them court jesters and the cycle is complete (??????)
