i was working out by YEG, the international airport here

i was 600m from the terminal, 400 from the runway

on the backside of the airport

nothing but a chainlink fence and fairly light gate to stop me from causing trouble

and my truck could have knocked that gate down no problems

akhlut according to some estimates i've read the pre-european contact population of the americas was anywhere between 50-100 million so i'd say it was just plain more deaths, not just proportionately

To be fair, the vast majority of the Native Americans who died post-Contact died of infectious European diseases, which, while attributable to Europeans, were by and large not their fault in any meaningful sense of the term (any intentional infections seemed to be incidental to the epidemics, and not particularly organized, and most of those who died did so before Europeans even set foot on their territory).

standard disclaimer that obviously this isn't to downplay the tragedy or the savagery of the european conquest or the fact that natives still get the shortest end of the north american stick to this day

I'm just talking north of the Rio Grande in what is today the US and Canada; population estimates for that area are generally "only" around 9-30 million, with most being killed from diseases.

Though, a not insubstantial portion were enslaved and scalped and so forth.

If you're talking about all of the Americas, people with significant Indian ancestry is around 50 million.

However, it does say something that it took 500 years for Indian populations to reach where they were before Europeans arrived.
