At random I was reminded of the existence of The Vision of Escaflowne, and got hit by a surprise nostalgia attack.

The memories that bring back...

I think it's the first anime I've ever watched / followed.

I may have seen others, without knowing it was anime (like Inspector Gadget), but it was the first I actively followed.

And many years later, I'm not even sure I remember the story, just that I found it amazing (mostly for what I thought were stunning visuals and scenery, and the music also - I just re-listened to the opening, and I still love it).

I'm kinda scared to try to re-watch this and have the same experience as with Scooby-Doo (IE : see that it was in fact stupid and end up hating it).

*checks wikipedia*

My bad, the Japanese only helped the production, it was an Americano-European production at the core.

Still, I believe a number of other cartoons at the time were actually anime, like Princess Sarah, Heidi, or Maya The Honey Bee.

well I can say that I've never heard of any of those, I was attributing it to cultural differences though, but that could also be it

Eyup.

Funny how these things go.

When we were spending the afternoon at my grandma's, and my three sisters were watching some girly high-school sitcoms the 90's were ripe with on the teevee, I would denounce them to my grandma for watching "stupid TV", they'd get expelled from the TV room, and I'd get to watch my cartoons in peace while they'd launch me daggers with their eyes. :3

The perks of being the youngest kid. :smugdog:

I bought that on DVD years back because I remembered enjoying it as a kid, but what I didn't realize is that the sanitized dub they put on T.V. cut out all the really boring Van/Hitomi shit to focus on the awesome looking magic robots smashing each other.

It ended up being really disappointing.

My first animes were Record of Lodoss War, Bubblegum Crisis, and AD Police.

I didn't have an actual older brother, but I had a figurative older brother, and that man was great.

Rewatching RoLW as an adult is hilarious when you see just how terrible it is and yet at the same time how glorious that someone literally took their D&D game and made it into a cartoon translated into multiple languages

Does a show count as your first anime if you didn't even know it was an anime when you watched it?
