For the loosest definition of professional. And definitely not by the ATOs definition.

For now.
You get money because people buy your stuff. That's professional in my book :v

Yeah if Swannie asks, I'm not a musician on the side.
Probably won't have to worry about Swannie after September :v

I point out when people dumber than me do stuff I'm not dumb enough to. And I'd hardly consider 'videogame designer' as a positive contribution to society. Unless we count whores with the clap. And we leave mothers out of it.

Actually, I'm even worse. I write tabletop shite. HAHAHHAHAHAH. LUDDITE.

Released one product and have about ~14k copies of it in official circulation (most of which sold via a charity bundle style package). Nowadays I get a few sales a month with my royalties going into PayPal and helping my Steam habit. Did it through an Australian gov't program to train people who want to run small businesses and stimulate entrepreneurialism. Turns out my business plan/budget went out the window when a back injury forced me to spend personal funds that were going to be advertising costs on physio appointments. But it was worthwhile. I learned a lot about setting up and running small businesses as well as admin stuff that carried over into my job now.

But I still try to do this stuff on the side, but 7 years (and counting) between actual releases rather than "hey guys I play with regularly, check out this concept I've smashed together and try and break it" stuff means that I don't really count.

It was something I did and was proud of. It didn't work, but I gave it a shot.

It's easier to try (and fail) when you don't have kids et al to worry about. Now I'd be too frightened to take such a plunge again.

Can anyone here recommend a really good, really loud gaming headset? I don't know what it is, but for some reason when I listen to music on my current one it just doesn't seem, i don't know, forceful or loud enough. It doesn't have the impact that it should, even when i've got it on max.

I don't know if that's because the headset is starting to go, which is a possibility. I don't think it was of the highest quality since it snapped in half when I tried to put it on one day and is currently held together with duct tape. Or maybe years of listening to really loud music have finally started to damage my hearing.

I've got a G35 which is pretty loud, but the gold standard currently is apparently the Audio Technica stuff. Most sites/mags I've seen rate them as the best.

Have they held up well? One consequence (aside from inevitable hearing damage) of listening to music as loud as I do is that I have a tendency to "burn out" headsets. This is actually the first pair that's broken physically before one of the ear pieces just went dead.

Well I've never had it blaringly loud (I've had to turn it down a few times and it was already on low) but it's been over a year since I got it and I sold my speakers and just use it now. It's held up great. Even the battery.

Don't forget, the idea that because the job pays less than unemployement benfits it is still worth it because it's a job! And the you have people proclaiming already tight unemployement benfits should be cut so the amazingly shit jobs which are literially not worth the time is "better".

But there's more to manual labor than janitors and fast food. How many schools actually offer up the trades as a viable choice after graduation in place of COLLEGE COLLEGE COLLEGE YOU'RE A FAILURE WITHOUT COLLEGE?
In Australia, replace "College" with "University".

Well, shit, apparently Chavez just died.

Cue knee-jerk cheering on SDN.

Well, I hope his successor continue his work of trying to improve the situation in Venezuela.

I suddenly feel kind of guilty that I never mailed Chavez a copy of that fanfic I wrote in German about him rescuing Little Red Riding Hood from George W Bush using socialist martial arts and channeling the spirits of the American aborigines to defeat Bush's magic.

Because it's focused on your ears and not blasting your thoracic cavity? Strap a subwoofer to your chest while you're listening to the head phones.

steffan o'sullivan hasn't written anything directly for more than that afaik (the original version of fudge dates back to '92!), and i'd consider him one of the critical figures of rpg design and theory

But yeah, I wonder if the people over there who are against this round of "cheering" were also against the other rounds of "cheering" when XYZ person died, and their stand literally comes down to whether or not they liked XYZ person.

Isn't that all it is? I liked this guys politics, so I'm sad. I didn't like his politics, so fuck him.

The ridiculousness of a guy in Germany being happy about a South American politician dieing though? That's just tiresome.

he did do bad things though
I think I'm broadly on the same ideological side as he was, but some of the stuff he did was pretty dodgy-looking, like meddling with the judiciary, and changing the constitution he himself put in place, so that he could get re-elected for the third term
of course, he did a lot of good things too. My (relatively uninformed) impression is that the good outweighed the bad, but there are plenty of reasons for people to dislike him
