I guess I didn't notice until now.
Well good on them. It deserves all the calling out it gets.
Kinda doesn't. Especially when its a bunch of SW nerds who write a SW webcomic trying to make out they aren't that nerdy.
Anyway D&D's being going downhill since they got out of Phantaom Menance. And the beneath the comic section is even worse. It's usually 'let me re-iterate that joke for you'

In general he seems to have issues with when to let a joke rest. On his other webcomic, he spent five comics in a row on the same joke about Coruscant's realism... and then used the exact same joke on Darth's and Droids later, just for good measure.

Heh... forgot about that. I guess I was just in a music oriented state of mind this morning.
All day I was like, "He can't be thinking of Shinedown...!"
Then I get back here and now it's like
It dawns upon me that my entire mentioning of this and the previous statement about it would make much more sense if I mentioned that Shinedown's song on the soundtrack has brought me to tears.

So I's writing a fanfic on SB
You know, maybe I should be humble and worry that it means I'm a shitty writer, but I can't help thinking looking at the audience response says a lot about nerds and fiction
Fic is supposed to be an intimate-scale body horror/suspense story. It has basically two characters and not all that much happens in terms of action. If I had to give one of those terrible cheesy "it's X meets Y!" descriptions I'd say it's kind of like Rosemary's Baby but more Cronenbergesque*. This means story has to rely mostly on character and atmosphere to create the intended air of uneasiness and fearful anticipation.
What nerds talk about re this fic:
A lot about what the woman's pregnancy and birth is going to look like, a lot about how the fic fits into the pre-existing universe I'm working with, very little about how well I'm actually doing re: characterization, creating appropriate atmosphere etc..
Noteable highlights:
- noticing a slightly creepy undercurrent of assuming female character will be essentially passive victim with no real agency
- at one point coming out and asking for feedback on whether a writing technique I was using was working or not and getting one short hugboxy comment on it. This to be contrasted with relatively extensive discussion stimulated by guilty pleasure infodump chapter re: stuff like how my critter's bullshit genetics works.
- of critique I did recieve, it was mostly "consistency" stuff wrt the original material.
- really thinking about it, the one serious bit of critique I did get was when I called out # 1 and got re: you placed that character in a position where her ability to effect the story is limited (btw, a view I disagree with, and I actually intend for her to make a very important decision, though arguably not the right one).
I guess maybe what I'm trying to get at is it's giving me more appreciation of how a place like that can be terrible and actively poisonous wrt learning to write; feedback like that gives you exactly the wrong impression of what's important in writing.
* Is a
Species fanfic, motivated re: I liked the first movie more than I thought I would, thought the second movie was complete shit, thought that was kind of a pity as a male version of the creature from the first movie was an idea that had some potential.

Mang I've had fanfic ideas bouncing around in my head for years. That's actually why I brought up the Wedge Antilles vs. Gundam pilots thing to veef. I just can't imagine my writing would be any good, so I never go through with it.

I seriously doubt it would be any worse than the average fanfic. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't make basic grammar mistakes, at least.

A crossover between Gundam and Aaron Allston's Wraith Squadron stuff might be pretty fun, actually. Have some sort of X-wing/power armour transforming superfighter he's supposed to be testing for the military or something, although that might be getting more into Macross than Gundam territory.

The Empire reveals it's new superweapon, and IT'S A GUNDAM!!!
The GUndams could have force-amplifying shits, so Darth Vader in his black zaku (it's 3x eviller) can force choke star destroyers, and then luke has to deflect laser shots from the death star with his jedi gundam laser sword

it got shaky once they crossed over with Farscape

The Ori could have been an interesting exploration of the show's themes, since for all practical purposes they actually ARE gods, but they bungled that with fuck stupid superweapons and generally flat writing
also Sam really should have been put in charge of SG-1
And whatserface was infinitely annoying

I used to watch SG-1 up until the weird stuff with Daniel and his kid and the super powers. and I caught a few of the last eps (including the WTF hack job WRT asgard) but I never watched it from start to finish.
Same with Farscape, but the bits of Farscape I have watched were cool. I loved the stuff Jim Henson's creature studio did, I liked the way it never took itself seriously, and I've rediscovered the fact they don't care about numbers.
