I was somewhat beside myself with bewilderment when I witnessed the Super Sonico anime have both respect and restraint concerning the titular character. This is basically K-On the college years.

But man she owns a lot of cats.

Sonico is a smart college student who everyone loves and respects. She works hard for herself and also for her friends who after work play together in a three piece band.

She is actually a good role model.

The Super Sonico anime is treating female characters better than Watanabe's Space Dandy.

Veef brought up Super Sonico The Animation. Sonico is the popular moe moe mascot of Nitroplus (which mostly makes eroge). She is pretty recognisable, with her voluptuous body, pink hair and distinctive headphones. My assumption is that she is mostly just a fanservice object - I mean, she is actually presented as a gravure idol - and the game she was in was just 'take photos of Sonico'. So the anime apparently being restrained and respectful blows my mind.

Space Dandy is Watanabe Shinichiro's (Cowboy Bebop, Sakamichi no Apollon) new project. It is about Space Dandy a useless loser who has work as an 'alien hunter'. It is visually kinetic, striking, frenetic but also pretty juvenile. The first half of the first episode is spent on Boobies, a space breastaurant. One of the female main characters is Honey, a waitress who works there (the others are QT, Dandy's robot co-pilot/vacuum cleaner, and Scarlet, Dandy's boss).
