People ask Europeans why they have so many difficulties building the United States of Europe.

No, I just don't consider myself as a person. :v

I'll take that as a tacit acknowledgement that you do not, in fact, believe that it should be taught in schools because it is not, in fact, normal/proper/etc. English. :smug:

Hey Ryan why don't you speak normal English instead of your degenerate North American "dialect"?

Which north american dialect? Northwestern? South eastern? North eastern? The "accentless" Southern Californian?

I speak what's been taught to me in school.

I'm willing to bet that most of what you speak is in fact what your family and youth peer group spoke.

And would AAVE become "normal" English for you if it were taught in a school?

I suppose so.

Sure, but I don't entertain any notions that deviations from what I'd write in an essay are in any way 'proper' English, and I certainly don't feel a bizarre need to make people feel 'uncomfortable' for not understanding it.

People stop

The evolution of a launguage is not so much like a river that twists and winds its way with tributaries as a burst dam that spills out across the countryside like the flooded Platte River.

Huh. I think I see where you're going here, but could you elaborate a bit? I think I'm getting hung up in the suddenness implied by the simile, as I've never considered language evolution a sudden process.

Also - on the venting topic: My left index finger feels really weird, not pain weird so much, but almost hypersensitive, like I can feel each muscle and the movement therein. It's really weird, and it's bugging me. If you've ever rubbed washed your hands while one hand is numb, that kind of "one-sided" movement/pressure is almost what it feels like.

Given that the quote that caused Saxonite to lose his shit was from a black woman saying 'wow glad I can speak comprehensible English because it means I'm functionally literate', apparently not.

Yeah, the dam bursting metaphor isn't great because it's not about speed, but spread. You know what, a metropolitan rail system would make a better comparison; it all starts in the same central station but ends up in different locales. Branch lines spread it even further. Intercity rail links refer to the dilution, assimilation, absorbtion of dialects.

Anyone interested in a popular and easy read on the topic of the english language would do well to get hold of Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue.

THANK YOU! I read that from the library a couple years ago and have been trying to remember the title.

So my mum mentioned now is a good time to try the driving thing again and that's a big panic for me. Got to the theory test again, (which i guess shouldn't be a big deal) after it run out.

but its got to stage where i've cocked up the practical test so many times it doesn't feel actual possible to pass at all.

I failed the practical test 5 times. Passed it on the 6th try.

I seriously doubt it to be impossible for you to pass it, unless you suffer from a disability I am not aware of.

Have you tried taking it at a rural branch of whatever you call the DMV?

That's what I did.

oxy, yeah its not literally impossible for me to pass. If I could just go an hour without fucking up and being in the wrong lane or something.

Already in a pretty rural area, Aaron but the test centre is in the middle of town. Not sure if there are any in even more remote areas but if there are the goverment probably shut them down already, lol. Thanks for advice.

I really hate it when horrible photographers are making money. I know someone who is defending his horrendously underexposed photos by saying stuff like 'I didn't have the flash, " I didn't have time to use the camera's meter because I was working." If you've been shooting for a year, it should be natural for you to get a correct exposure. The problem is that people like his photos, therefore preventing any critique. He's a hipster with a DSLR.

End of photography rant.

I feel this way about the trend in the last few years since decent DSLRs became more affordable(or at least, desirable enough to justify spending more than you did on your first car) where people buy one, play with it for a bit, then start a facebook page called (Your Name Here) Photography or somesuch. Everybody and their dog.
