So I'm going to an outdoor range with my friends tomorrow to shoot rifles for the first time ever.

Anyone got any tips? I'll be shooting an AR-15 carbine that's tricked out to look like an M4, and a WWII-era bolt action Mosin-nagant.

Wear good ear protection.

Double up on the ears. And either wear a thick jacket or see if he has a shoulder pad, the Mosin has a brutal kick.

PULL the Mosin's stock into your shoulder. Don't leave a millimeter of room for it to move.

Take your time between shots and steady down, it ain't life or death.

My mother told me, when she did shooting decades and decades ago, that the instructor told them that the most important thing was to learn NOT to shoot.

Not sure what this mean in practice as I never shot myself, but I thought I'd share the tip.

The instructor was saying you want to avoid using that weapon as much as possible.

It was target shooting with BB-guns, not self-defence courses.

Were you trying to find a profound way to say "know how far your weapon can shoot?"

it is all about craziness from adults. misplaced priorities, laziness, and stupidity combine to result in a lot of injuries, damages, and plain old waste

So I got a little excited today at the range, and before I knew it, i'd fired 40 rounds from Alan's Mosin without a shoulder pad. I have a feeling my arm's gonna hurt like a bitch tomorrow.

The only time I hurt myself while mowing the lawn was when my arm accidentally touched the exhaust.

Skin was peeling of. Didn't hurt, though...

I remember when we put gauze on it, the skin began regrowing around the fibers after a while. Hurt like a bitch when we had to remove it.
