so it starts off funny (making a time machine out of a mobile phone attached to a microwave), and then there's this wacky time travel conspiracy (in the year 2035, CERN have taken over the world. Democracy is only a memory! Resistance is death!), and then there's this really tedious sub-maduka time loop that takes over the whole plot and a bunch of forced angst that doesn't make sense and argh
I mean it's still fairly watchable and it's mostly free of standard anime creepiness, but it's just got so many annoying things and they change the rules of the time travel like three times (in ways that seem like they contradict what's been seen before) and... glarglblargl. I dunno. Coming up to the last two episodes now, so maybe it'll redeem itself with some killer twist.
EDIT: OK the last episode had some nice wackiness. But, overall, this series was a lot like one of those OMGRANDOM comedy webcomics that suddenly decides to go all SERIOUS and MATURE after a year because that's what PROPER WRITERS liek EVAMANGELION do
Plot wrote:When a portal from another world appears in Ginza, Tokyo, a legion of soldiers and monsters emerge to attack the city. Thanks to their far more advanced weaponry and tactics, the JSDF easily repels the enemy, passes through the gate and establish a forward base of operations to force the Roman-styled empire of the other world to open peace negotations. Yōji Itami is one of the Japanese officials sent to investigate the other world, where magic, dragons and elves are real, using his knowledge of fantasy stories to make his way in this new environment.

'Pretty good' isn't really how I would describe the Gate anime, though it is less obnoxious than the novels it's based on.
