do you have an actual stereo system with a receiver and speakers (and maybe even an amp) or is it one of those bullshit 2.1 computer speakers sets
fake edit: or god one of those super-bullshit 5.1 "home theater" boxsets

you have piqued my curiosity good sir
Honestly I shouldn't be snobby about something that works for people, I used a 2.1 set on my computer for years.
That said the shortfall of 2.1/5.1 boxsets is that the tiny little satellite speakers they usually use aren't particularly great, so the subwoofer has to take on more range, and there's usually a range where neither the subwoofer nor the satellites are really effective.
With a good set of speakers though you shouldn't need a subwoofer; in a "proper" setup the subwoofer should only kick at sounds below like 80hz... basically those sounds you feel, like an explosion or a gunshot or maybe a heartbeat or whatever.
The best thing about the boxsets is that they're very compact, which is an entirely legitimate concern.

It is directly linked via a USB cable to the computer.
Oh neat, that doesn't look bad.
Don't know what to tell you about the noise, though. Does the sound go away if you disconnect the USB cable? If it does, you might try using a different connection like analog, or optical.

Just customize 3.1 home theater. That's all you need, really.

Nah, it's the amp stage itself that's wearing out.
It's been running 5-8 hours a day on average, everyday for the last eight years and a half.
