When I came out and said that I didn't think Joss Whedon was all that and that Firefly/Serenity were held in a higher regard than they deserve was the only time I got abuse while doing radio.

Browncoats mang.

That's funny because I think Firefly (not Serenity) is the best thing he's ever done. I liked Buffy at first but it disappeared up its own ass after the third season.

Whedon fans are pretty bad at taking any kind of criticism directed at their man.

Intellectual laziness with a heady mixture of chasing 'cool ideas' is my take.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was by no means the most consistant show ever, but the 'season 8' comics touted as the sequal to the tv series are full of I'M A JUGGALO WOOP WOOP stupid. It really shows that Whedon is a comic fanboy who managed to get his stuff published. With all the horrors that entails.

You should try reading the "season 8" comics to see how it went so far up it's own ass it went out the other end only to needed to repeat the process.

Firefly was good, and I liked it but this was at the time when people were claiming it as the greatest thing ever.

I'm not sure how one could confuse Firefly with The Wire but whatever.

Yeahhh... that's the problem. It was a good show unjustly cancelled before it had a chance to shine, but it was no Star Trek or Star Wars. I still remember one of the reviews for Serenity by David Strattan IIRC, who was like 'this is the next Star Wars' or something along those lines. Understated though, this is Strattan we're talking about. But yeah... nah.

I'd say it's more "got cancelled before it had a chance to derail and suck".

I maintain that Firefly is an inferior rehash of Cowboy Bebop.

That was Serenity.

I never saw the point of getting the RPG when I rarely ever play tabletop RPGs. And if I were enclined to make a game, I'd use Traveller for it as Firefly comes across as someone's Traveller game.

Got the RPG, never played it, but the mechanics look great - neat ideas around ships as collective NPCs.

Looking forward to the boardgame from the folks who made Spartacus.

I'll probably play the game soon enough.

Firefly is like the Kurt Cobain of scifi. It was great at the time, and ended before it could really degrade. But time has not been kind to it.

Firefly was axed way before a ton of storylines were developed properly (like the Blue Sun who were like a state within a state, ect) and Serenity felt like a slightly dumbed down Firefly with more of a budget.

Heroes would be much more fondly remembered if it ended during its first or second season..

Have the Serenity comics actually developed any of the plot lines they had to cut from the show due to cancellation, I.E. do they have a recognizable story arc? Or are they all just "slice of life" stuff set in the Firefly universe?

Please do. The fact of a person spreading 'don't eat meat and dairy, k?' as a philosophy and dietary choice is not a harmful or even all that annoying practice.

Harassing someone over that would basically make you a cunt.

I played it years ago, I think 06 or 07, but the GM only used it for the mechanics. He used the basic system for a story set in Pirates of the Caribbean instead of Firefly, so the campaign I played in was slightly modified. It's an alright system, and the core mechanics can be pretty easily ported. In terms of fluff and non-core mechanics, I think it's a bit limited in that it was developed with a very specific setting in mind, but that's true for a lot of systems built around a movie or tv series.
