so speaking of marriage i was offered a ride to the mormon institute of religion tonight. apparently god did not will it though, as i left the decision to accept in his capable hands* and something came up so here i am still at the house
* that is, if they called me tonight, i'd tag along, but i decided i wouldn't call them. instead my brother IMd me and axed if i can watch his youngest tomorrow so i gotta make sure i get to bed early anyway lol
anywho tbh if it was just talking about the books that'd be cool (though i prefer the smaller environments anyway -preaching to the missionaries in my house is a blast) but what scares me is 1) the topic first came up when i asked them about how temple marriages work and 2) all the material i can find about it seems to emphasize "single ppl 18-30 are welcome to attend"
I actually find ADR's stories about his incredibly slow fall into the arms of the LDS kind of fascinating

nah my life is awesome, that's why i have to be weary of these marriage traps. falling into one of them would prolly lead to changes
and i don't like things that are different

the mormons are pretty great (well, except for the homophobic and sexist ones, which for all i know is the majority but the folks i've been hanging out with are pretty great and the theology is fascinating - and very easy to learn)

The thing about any organization made up of people is that it will reflect the membership. If all the young Mormons you know are chill about homophobia and racism tomorrow's CLDS will be chill about it too. All the Mormons I know (young people from Utah and the Mormons in my city area) are cool about it. The Mormons in southern Alberta are less chill (sometimes significantly) but that'll change too, with time and exposure. They're all fairly rural, down there, which contributes.

The only Mormons I know were my brother's former in-laws, one of whom (the mother) was pretty homophobic. A couple years ago at a Thanksgiving she had to bring up gay marriage and how it was dangerous and reflected permissiveness in society. And on and on and on and then when she finished she turned to me and said 'Or am I wrong?' because I must have acquired a reputation for being the left-winger in my brother's family. And I replied 'Yep, you're wrong. It's discrimination to not allow gays to marry, pure and simple.'
Gosh, don't you just love family get togethers? Well, they're not family anymore

Haha Chris you won't have to deal with those in the city, food comes from rural areas.

watching dragonball evolution
what the shit is going on
why is goku an american
also his hair isn't spiky enough
more importantly, where's Krillin???
why is he whining
being happy-go-lucky and not whining is like the main thing about goku
this has been your weekly dose of evilsoup complaining about shit films several years after anyone stopped caring

also piccolo looks shit, he hasn't even got tentacles
though lol the fight looks like it's going to take place in a big empty field in the middle of nowhere with nobody there and it's like a thousand miles wide and it's right over there, so at least they've got that right
and what is it about hollywood that likes assholes who win by BELIEVING IN THEMSELVES as protagonists? Rather than, say, knowing what the fuck they're doing? Uch.

I think your entire line of questioning can be answered by the simple explanation of the filmmakers in question being incompetent and only getting things right by luck or accident.

I just want a ten-year ban on 'chosen one' plots in films, with the punishment of breaking the ban being death by hydrochloric acid
is that too much to ask

OF COURSE IT IS!
You'll sink half of a multi-billion dollar industry. Think of what that'll do to the economy!

sure, thousands of people will lose their jobs (and many more indirectly),
but it'll be worth it, I think, because YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE YOU CAN DO EVERYTHING THESE OTHER GUYS NEED TO TRAIN FIVE THOUSAND YEARS TO DO AND MORE WITHOUT EVEN TRYING is such an annoying and corrosive thing
gotta crack some eggs to make an omelette, yaknow? Every utopia needs a few bodies amongst the foundation stones.

yeah, and general public opinion too. both cultural osmosis from the bottom up (well outside in perhaps) and the general authorities playing politics from the top down
Stofsk wrote:The only Mormons I know were my brother's former in-laws, one of whom (the mother) was pretty homophobic.
yeah I've noticed a few casual homophobic things said at the meetings too. for example "my friend became a lesbian and left the church but I still love her and am her friend"
the intended message was to be good to people but the friendship was only in jeopardy in the first place cuz of your discriminatory feelings, but on the other hand maybe that's a first step, still being friends despite the 'choice' may eventually lead to a shift of true acceptance for this individual.

nah, some part of me - no, not that part, you perverts - actually kinda hopes i'm not wrong about the whole arranged marriage thing. she's actually kinda cool.
tho she was humming hymn #2 from the LDS book ("The Spirit of God"). yes, i know quite a few of them already; my superb memory doesn't take Sundays off ...and now it is stuck in my head.
but meh, i don't hate it. i mean it is no "Otome no Policy" but what is, i adore that song
