so they were all freezing and Isabella is like "WHY DON'T THEY JUST USE MARS FIRE?!?!"
lol we were all thinking it
but that was a great episode anyway cuz the fight isn't what the story is about. the real question was will ami go to school in Germany? and that was good stuff. they all decided to be supportive of her decision but spoilers she decided not to go
all for one
and one for all

i just shaved for the first time since christmas. what a pain in the ass, my bloodied face reminds me why i put it off for so long
but my moustache kept getting in the way of eating and soup kept falling into my chin beard so the annoyance scales tipped
BTW i watched my first few episodes of sailor moon s today. never watched these before. at first i hated it because it was different but i still love it because it is the same and the different stuff (changed a few voices, different background music, it feels more japanese) isn't all that bad anyway
so awesome

Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
A random bullshit question came up to me :
"can you have sympathy without empathy ?"
Now to find the exact meanings of these two words for starter...

No.

Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
I'd say no. I can't picture any situation where someone could actually feel sympathy if they have a complete lack of empathy. Seems like being able to at least understand another person's emotional state is a requirement for sympathizing with them.
Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
That was my understanding as well.
Thought this could make for an interesting dissertation subject for a Philosophy Baccalaureat exam. I personnaly am horrible at the exercise, but depending on the exact phrasing of the question I guess it could make for some interesting results.

No.
Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
Like maybe :
"Is empathy necessary for the existence of society ?"
"Is empathy necessary for the existence of society ?"
No.
Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
if I get the definitions right i'd say you can indeed have one without the other
empathy means "I feel your pain"
sympathy means "I care about your pain"
you might feel something without caring about it - maybe it just isn't that big of a deal to you ("I feel it and carry on so you just need to get over it like me"). and you can care about something without feeling it yourself. for example I don't know what it is like personally to not be totally awesome and brilliant and pretty but I can still want to help alleviate your problems

Fuck a warning, this post deserves a medal. That's dedication, digging up a thread from the first day of the board.
Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
have they changed the default theme over there? It looks different than I remember
Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
No, I just have the "style=5" tag in the URL which means it shows the MF theme rather than the default. Because I hate having to look at BlackSoul before I log in, so I changed my favorites link so it'd always show MilleniumFalcon.
Re: The Testing Chat III: The Time of Great Chatting
Yeah, he changed the default from MilleniumFalcon to Blacksoul back in August 2002.evilsoup wrote:have they changed the default theme over there? It looks different than I remember

Oh man, I am this close to going John Gray in a thread on SDN.
Though I guess that's still roundabout empathy, since it's basically looking at the parts of the thing I can empathize with and thinking "wow, the parts I can't empathize with must be really bad if this is the better option."
Hmm, just thinking about my own experience, my attitudes towards transsexual people kind of seem to fit in having the latter without the former. Like I find the whole thing kind of difficult to comprehend on an intuitive level, but I gotta believe they're telling the truth about their own experience because look at all the shit they're willing to go through in order to transition. I remember wincing just at some of the stuff Marina said about the physical process of transitioning, let alone all the social bullshit they have to put up with.adr wrote:if I get the definitions right i'd say you can indeed have one without the other

This reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut talking about becoming president of the American Humanist Association after Isaac Asimov's death and killing them with his opening joke: "Well, Isaac's in heaven now."Jung wrote:http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... 1#p3768651RogueIce wrote:Who what when where why?

What I find far more interesting is how "trolling" is seen as an automatically bad thing. Trolling is at the root of Socratic irony, of a certain amount of Nietzsche's work, of some Zen philosophy- the troll is a masterful art, and somebody like Armond White being called a troll (and, to be frank, his review of TF2 carries a cachet of trolling) shouldn't be an insult because trolling is of a certain benefice.
