Mitt beat up the President like he was Vernon Dursley and Obama was Harry Potter. It was pretty clear Romney was better prepared. Maybe Denver's thin air threw the Prez off his game, or his strategy to set the bar low for the first debate worked exactly as intended.

My favourite part of that thread was Nitram's "at least he has a good home life" comment.

That was just weird.

they did a credit check on a missing person and found an open bank accout

they say "so either she's communicating from beyond the grave" -- "or she's still alive"

but i'm like "or someone stole her identity"

Do I want to get into an Evopsych throwdown? I think I do.

Best idea, we want to make it as difficult as possible for people to use these ideas in public.

Thnx

Though I see two obvious possible ways to falsify an evopsych hypothesis

1) Show that something hypothesized to be a behavior arising from biology appears to be culture-specific

2) Show that a predicted biological feature does not exist (e.g. if men are more sexually jealous than women because of different sexual selection dynamics there should be differences in their genes and brains that correspond to this, if they do not exist the hypothesis is falsified)

Granted I imagine the latter approach would often require much more advanced scientific understanding than we presently have.

If that would do it then history would seem to definitively disprove Evopsych from the start.

That's why I said what he said. It's like he needed to find anything to cling to to not feel bad. It's hilarious.

I love how the 'hard sci-fi' thread has gone further into comic book territory than most versus debates.

Yep, it's total common sense to have like, billions of planet-killing weapons lying around to ensure MAD within your own galaxy. Even though the things are apparently undetectable (which makes them kinda useless for MAD, if your enemy can't launch a counterattack, destruction isn't mutual).
I don't see why a civ with FTL would take them as a credible threat anyway.

I just can't believe how badly the HSF is being wanked out.
I guess the point was "how powerful could one possibly be", though, so it should be expected that it would go to extremes.

What I'd do is repurpose something else to do the fighting and do like defense in depth. Consider the other side of the light speed coin... suppose the evil ftl empire attacks the stl wankciv and actually manages to conquer a part of it. That part can't surrender the whole collective, and news of their defeat is going to take a long time to spread.

Thus the ftl evil empire is going to have to fight for each and every inch they want almost as a physical necessity - each new conquest doesn't know what they're up against, so they might not be inclined to roll over. When you move on to a new star, you are starting the fight all over again.

Is that worth it to them? (I guess it depends on what they want but anything could be made a giant hassle every step of the way.)

And if the STL folks decide to be the aggressors, the FTL probably have their own advantage. Attacking is going to take coordination, and the ftl could fuck that up by staying ahead of the plan (literally!) and fucking it up. Might not work - a wankciv would simply smother the ftl one with tons of time and numbers - but eh.
