It's an insecurity thing. (EDIT: And of course the pervasiveness of those ENLARGE YOUR DICK NOW ads which makes it a subject of juvenile humor) There's apparently been actual research and it's shown that women do not, in fact, care about your penis size. But it's more important either A) how you use it (for the one night stand, quickie, NSA types) or B) the greater relationship and intimacy and so on and so forth for the relationships. Also probably still a bit of A.

Jokes aside I actually have a couple of chick friends who have a preference for large penises in much the same way that I have a preference for large breasts. Or rather a much stronger preference.

e: also to be quite honest I think a fair amount of the 'women don't care how big it is' thing is pushed by men to make themselves feel less inadequate. I don't really have any data to back this up but I've had candid chats about sex with women and you know what they totally do like big dicks.
