Reasons not to mess with your partition setup late at night: you may delete that Xubuntu partition you haven't booted in a year before you realize that's where GRUB keeps its, well, vital GRUB parts. Oops.

But there's never a problem without an opportunity, so now I've cleaned out the old junk, finally gave Steam it's own slice of SSD to play on and I finally installed Debian on my desktop (every other device or server I use has it, so why not). Which couldn't figure out my network card, so I did manual wireless setup. Which didn't work because certain versions of Wheezy have an irrational hatred of USB3 and go NO MORE ROOM ON EP RING CLEANSE DIE UNTERSTANDAARTEN. That's about the time when ALSA took a shit on the carpet and fired the speakers at maximum volume.

YEAR OF THE DESKTOP

I also honestly enjoyed the troubleshooting so at least I'm in the right sector.

All I got from that was, "Linux based desktops are annoying and finicky, I should stick with Windows."

they're as finnicky as you want them to be
unless you're a computer nerd (well, even more than you'd have to be to want to use Linux in the first place) like bounty here you shouldn't really be looking at your partition table, let alone feel the urge to fiddle with it in the middle of the night (that can make you go blind, you know)

Does messing with your partition also cause God to kill kittens?

The better lesson to take away here is to pick the right distribution for the right task. Debian is a great Linux distro but it's not an instant desktop OS, especially when (like me) you don't install the default graphical shell because you want to set one up manually afterwards. Command line posse REPRESENT (ahem).

I previously installed distros like Xubuntu and Elementary for day-to-day use and those are pretty close to the Windows experience of 'plop in CD, select language, boot into desktop with a menu to connect to wifi'. It's just fun to actually do stuff yourself from time to time. It's what separates the IT'ers from the webdesigners.

My regime in the past 24 hours has mostly consisted in crepes with Nutella spread.

I regret nothing.

Quebec is a beautiful place and I will not tolerate any further slander of an integral part of Canada.

This is your final warning.

Joke went over my head

Saskatchewan jokes about how flat it is are tolerated, but you are reminded that Saskatchewan is the sister province to Alberta, aka God's Country.
