Redshirts was super-fun, so go ahead and spoil (or just go in the 'reviewing scifi' thread?)
adr wrote:here's what i would check first: see if the bike shop has a used bike for sale. i got one of mine used for $200 in 2001 and am still riding it and still loving it. he (owner of the store) wanted i think $350 for it on the tag, but i offered him the $200 cash and he took it.

bike shops tend to stand behind their sales better, since they actually know what they're doing, and a well maintained bike can give good service for decades (my summer bike here was already ten years old when i bought it, and now into its 20's, it is still in excellent condition), so being used isn't necessarily a bad thing.

still almost certainly going to cost you more than the wal mart plan, but if you have a wee bit more up front cash it'd be worth it, and who knows, the guys at the shop might be willing to give you a deal. def doesn't hurt to ask at least
Definitely this. Plenty of relatively inexpensive used bikes around that'll blow some crappy department store bike out of the water.

So speaking of porn, I once again got hit with that ransomware shit (this one labeled PRISM how topical) from a second porn video site I had gone to many times before without incident. That's now two porn tube sites I have to write off forever. :argh:

Warning! Do not watch the Nostalgia Critic's Sailor Moon review if you are prone to getting shitty theme music stuck in your goddamn head. He plays enough of the theme to get it worked in there for a couple of days at least.

I spent the last three hours looping the Shingeki no Kyojin theme to burn it out.

the whole system pisses me off

Call back. Politely but firmly explain to the first person that you tried to refuse service but had it coerced on you. When they hold the line ask to speak to a supervisor. The first level often can't change things but the second can. Hold firm. Explain that you feel the charge is unfair, explain the situation. The system is wretched but it has a logic to it and you can fight it. Just be firm, polite, an willing to push to the next level.

I'm spending time every day trying to raise the tone on the facebook Cosplay page but I feel like it's a losing battle. Now they've posted a pic of Cassandra Cass playing Jessica Rabbit and the comments make me want to burn a house down.

Redshirts was super-fun, so go ahead and spoil (or just go in the 'reviewing scifi' thread?)
Dear god! This is a book written by a television sci-fi fan for television sci-fi fans. It somehow manages to completely destroy the fourth wall while at the same time building a completely new one, then demolishing that one in a matter of about ten pages. The lines are perfect, the timing is perfect, and the very structure of the novel makes it sheer awesome.

How on earth has this not been turned into a movie - or better yet, a sci-fi channel miniseries. The trailer just writes itself, and could be a complete and utter headfake.

Didn't Galaxy Quest have a trailer that was a trailer for the show within a show?

Oh dear, do you think Gibraltar is the most pointless topic over on the train wreck N&P sub-forum? I'm only paying it half attention and seems to be childish posturing between two troubled political administrations, causing irritating inconvenience for the locals. And Elfdart is making an ignorant cheap shot at the British servicemen (the underequipped British infantrymen meme).

I think the meme of the "underequipped" British in Afghanistan and Iraq was mostly down to British Army/Royal Navy/RAF infantrymen, through institutional inertia, going about in comparatively flimsy Range Rovers (which were alright for Northern Ireland or the brief jaunts with the Desert Storm and the Balkan campaigns, but not for driving down IED lined roads for roughly a decade). And the British and the rest of NATO had been slowly winding down their conventional forces following the end of the Cold War (with AUS/NZ/CAN servicemen having similar logistical and equipment issues to the British).

But some people (and the tabloid media) go on and on as if we're sending out men armed with sharp sticks and wearing paper shoes.

As a rule, Anime Openings and Endings will be at least decent, because the producers are usually willing to shell out a shit-ton of cash to hire recognized musicians to write and perform good songs, and use high-quality animation, usually higher than the show itself, to the point where some shows like Gundam Seed actually spend a significant percentage of their budget on opening credits.

What's the deal exactly ? Sexism / creepiness, or something else ?
