Well, if apart from the parts you listed everything else is good, you could resell-it for the spare parts and the scrap-metal to the junkyard. I figure if they aren't total assholes, you could get a thousand dollars or two out of it.

Though I don't have any experience owning a motorized vehicle so don't take my word for it.

Just keep in mind that when the cost of repairing a vehicle (or anything, really) is above the one you paid to acquire it in the first place, you should seriously reconsider the idea of paying for said repairs.

How old is it? I'd be surprised if the insurance didn't just total it anyway, so you may not have the choice.

$14Gs is not that unreasonable for a new car. Pretty cheap, actually, for the lower-end sedans.

this is not the old escape. We've since sold that to a scrapyard. This is the 2010 chevy Malibu i've had since about March.

Which is kind of funny when you think about it. I had the escape for 8 years with barely a scratch on it right up until the end, and i've had this for three goddamn months and it's already smashed up.

The guy at the shop says he doesn't think the Insurance company will total the car out given it's value and the projected cost of the repairs, but he hadn't actually gotten the door off yet and he still has some stuff he has to check, so it looks like this will be fixable, since there's no way I can afford a decent car with what I have.

When we bought it, I didn't even make enough to qualify for a loan. I had to borrow the money from my dad and agree to pay him back in installments. Right now, I can barely afford to pay the insurance deductible, the cost of the ticket, and the cost of a rental car. There's no way i'd be able to afford even a half-way decent replacement car, and apparently one of my father's conditions for continuing to help pay for school is that I drive a car that is "not shit."

I left it on the Trade-In tab, which is lower. Private Party Value is a little over $13,000 so more reasonable. And like I said, the specific model, options and mileage will also alter things pretty well. Upping it to the LTZ model, for example, gives a PPV of $14,660 for the car in "Good" condition.

yeah i've looked at blue book too. Its value is anywhere between 10 and 15 thousand dollars depending on what condition its classified in and the specific options. I think the guy at the shop said the repair cost had to hit 75-80% of the car's value for the insurance company to total it, so it looks like aside from the deductible i'm alright for now at least. My premiums are going to go up at the next renewal because of the points on my license from the ticket, but i'll just have to deal with that when it happens.

This will cost me about 3, and I have 2 already from a speeding infraction last year, which will disappear after next year. So the total number of "points" on my license will be five.

I'm kind of a redneck I guess, but I'd pull the door off myself and shop junkyards for a replacement door. The door is kind of an easy thing to replace. The wheel assembly right front can also be replaced. The dash board doesn't need replacing, nor does the rocker molding. Cracks in the dashboard can be dealt with with DIY epoxy kits and the same for the rocker molding (it's just anti-rust plastic over the lower body panels), and then a decent coat of paint across them will conceal the fact that it was damaged except at very very close range. The A-pillar damage, however, I could not repair myself, though if it had happened when Alexia and I had a friend who was a mechanic at the bus base she worked out, we could have gotten him to brace the A pillar and then done the rest of the work ourselves.

If you're that tight on budget (your dad's demand is fucking absurd, by the way. My 2001 Echo is a perfectly nice car even with well over 200k miles) you should learn to do more car work on your own. It's probably too late to do this because you already reported it to insurance, but it's something to think about for the future.

Washington, and Rhode Island, don't have points systems, nor does Oregon, though a lot of states do. Some of our states (I believe only Michigan and Illinois at this point) will also seize licenses until payment of fines or demand payment on the spot, the later being what I understand France does, though conversely most do not. There is a compact that 42 of the 50 states are members of that shares points and license suspensions.

As another tip for the future, plan out how many miles a day you plan to drive on a rental and the relative fuel efficiencies before going and getting a rental car... Sometimes a pickup from U-haul can be cheaper if you're only going to drive short distances.
