I had a look at the guidelines, and it says 'no cause' funding, but I don't think that really ousts a documentary with an environmental theme.

I'm thinking I'll get more funding with the ghost debunking theme as it is, also better interviews.

For rewards, I've got a few ideas summed up and I've done a couple basic calcs on how many supporters I'd need from each level. Anyway here's what I've got so far:
$10 iTunes Copy of the web-series, name in the credits
$20 Level 1 + Physical DVD
$50 Level 1 & 2 + Bluray edition with commentary and outtakes
$100 Level 1 through 3, + full color artbook

Hmm . . . now that I think about it Phant's Canadian right? Your employment status could be a problem if you want any cash out of this.

Shit I'd consider volunteering for a day or two if this gets made. Any excuse for a short trip.

Pay me cash and who cares? I'm an accountant, I'll help you cover the cash disbursement no problem.

I just don't want some kind of "took r jabs" scandal on my first film/mini series
on a side note i've got a much better idea on how to hammer out the budget
still not entirely sure about figuring in travel times but i've got some of the locations (with alternates) picked out

it's probably cool if he's not working for you and you're just reimbursing a visiting friend for time and travel expenses

Reimbursing them for time would probably count as pay, and the travel expenses are already figured into the budget. I just don't want to step on a legal landmine without realizing it.

I'll lie to you about how much my travel expenses will be. You're good.

But seriously I wasn't expecting a paycheque out of this, I just wanted to visit Oregon for free.

If you wanted to volunteer of course, that would be doable. It would give me more money to hire another person, and your food/travel costs would be covered.

Well lodging would be covered too, but what other costs? I've got the vehicle rental covered with the travel budget.

Eh, the kickstarter goal is $50k. I don't want an exorbitant documentary but I want it well funded to cover everything with some wiggle room, so I've been working out what I think is a reasonable budget.

Have you decided on a camera? I hear the Canon 7D is pretty cool for the price.

I'm exploring camera options, but I've set the video-camera budget at around $2000-2500, with an extra $1500 for a DSLR with additional lenses. In any case it's not really set in stone until I actually set up the kickstarter and get funds.

Whats the average goal for successfully funded docs on kickstarter

You can also create a homemade steadicam rig, if you want to walk and shoot at the same time.

I skimmed through the pages to see what the average funding was like, and there's a lot of really shitty looking ones with $100k for funds. I expect $50k is reasonable, so anything extra would be gravy and lets me do things like chartering a plane for flyover shots.

if you're going to be doing interviews, I don't think a DSLR is a good way to go, you'll want something you can plug a microphone into

I know that "one is born every second", but where does all these suckers generous benefactors on Kickstarter comes from ?
I mean... I'd be interested to see a statistical study on who pay how much on how many kickstaters with what goals.... It seems like there could be some good money to be made there, as long as the bobble doesn't pop...

Doing a bit of math, I've come up with some figures that I'll need at most 5000 donors, significantly less depending on how many people donate at higher levels. A lot of these I can probably round up by talking to the local newspapers of cities I'm planning to visit in order to drum up interest. Also, part of the plan is to launch it around October/Halloween, when interest in ghosts and the supernatural is at its height.
