Uh well good scifi gets as short a 4 eps for war in the pocket lol

But shit like Jekyll and ultraviolet and even season one primeval end before they run out of the energy and enthusiasm from first ep, and they're all written with that end in mind

They're not open, LET'S SEE HOW LONG WE CAN MILK THIS COW stuff, they have plots that aren't made of eternally extensible Lego

I guess shows like e wire and sopranos that have actual climaxes rather than end of year cliffhangers see ou next year slaves can get the same dramatic shit going on

Ps star trek never ever did :v actually heaps of American shows were only dramatic when they broke their continuity with time travel or parallel dimensions or NAZI SPACE NINJAS or whatever

But then that trend gave us endless singing buffy episodes so... Trope everted

It had some pretty low points but it didn't get time to ruin its interesting ideas

Imagine season 8 Jekyll

Jekylls wife's brother journeys to track down the dog infected with Jekyll virus in picturesque Phuket while haunted by story children

FUCKING THRILLING

i am reconsidering whether i care enough about this person to put up with a show like supernatural

it wasn't until you just articulated it, but i really like short shows

Mad Men is one of the only shows I still watch and it just wrapped season 5, and they take a huge break to write another season so it's not awful for the most part

The problem is, of course, there's a finite amount of good short shit and infinite terrible 10 season shit

i remember liking xena as a good and i can't even get past the first half of season 1 because it wasn't very good

What I saw of mad men was built on character drama anyway

Ten year shows are generally built on fanservice

Like Nietzsche says the first few years of some stuff is fine

Tbh I'd rather watch two seasons of Miami vice, a fascinating time capsule of culture, than ay of the four thousand ghost/demon shows that are secretly soap operas

And seriously aside from a plot omission and possibly entry barriers war in the pocket is good shit that ends and says something

There's a sweet spot where you can think critically about fiction and avoid totally gumming up your brain with stupid dreck. But your standards are low enough that somewhere on the planet real human beings could possibly create a show you'd like. One that you could watch without being compelled to bitch about it. And do it often enough that there's actually something to watch.

Enjoying mass media without losing your self-respect comes from finding your sweet spot.

If some huge amount, like 95%, of all content is beneath you, you probably need to lower your standards and lighten up a bit.

Which would you rather spend 40 minutes doing?

Nitpicking a bunch of shows apart and searching around to find that 95th percentile diamond in the rough, among stuff that lasted six episodes for a good reason because it was trash?

Or watching something in the 50th percentile of all TV shows because why not?

I like the second way better, entertainment is more fun when you can relax and enjoy it without the pretentious bullshit.

Yeah! Standards are for pussies!

No really, the only reason I have for watching the 95% crap is either social, because the focus is on poking fun at it with friends rather than the show in and of itself, or because I'm deliberately ignoring a vast majority of it for the one or two bright-spots that I have trouble easily finding elsewhere.

No, Hawkeye's annoying. I'd rather stare at Ep. VI Palpatine for 2 hours.

Too bad Trapper didn't get a sendoff although his departure was kind of abrupt.

Hawkeye comes back from something and Radar is like "Trapper got sent home, sorry"

it was the first ep of season 4

the actor wanted out of the show so we got two new characters

I saw the last episode of M*A*S*H as a kid and thought "meh, Knight Rider's taking the time slot." I was sad after watching the last episode of Babylon 5; now that was a good sci-fi series.
