Full auto is fun but expensive. Good luck controlling it under pressure unless you're like active duty or retired I was AF but didn't shoot auto until I was a cake-eating civilian. Wouldn't "son of a bitch" give four bursts?

Ho shit, .338 is brutal. Call me pussy, but I draw the line at .300 WM for any shoulder arm under 14 pounds. That kinda gong-ripping shit also tends to get the range master a bit...umm...annoyed at you unless you are a very well contributing member to the club.

That said, I once blew through a 1/4" steel plate at 25 yards with a .50AE Desert Eagle. It was a weird, but really cool, "Pwonk! Riip! Clang!" sound. It was a private range so I put $10 into the kitty for a new target after all 5 of us had riddled the poor thing.

He said he can't fire that one much because the ammo is too costly, Also the recoil is a bit much. My other friend Richard asked if he was going to get something called a .500 magnum, which is apparently even larger, but he said he didn't think he could handle it.

Remember i'm new to the whole gun thing. I just didn't think there would be much of a demand for anti-material rifles outside of the military and rhino poachers in Africa. I asked my friend why anyone would use that for hunting, and he claimed it would be more humane, since it would pretty much kill anything instantly.

Well he has a point. I gather they are used by guys in long range competitions.

Of course some just get bought because hey can be.

So my friend just told me a story about a gun range he used to go to, apparently some dude was handling his weapon incorrectly, pointing the barrel to the side instead of downrange, (which he told me is a big no-no) and the range officer walked up to him with his hand on his holster, and said: "Sir, put the weapon down or I will draw on you."

I'm glad we didn't go to that range.

My first experience at a gun range was pleasant except for the incessant "Obama is going to take our guns. So load up on ammo." This was in 2009, which I recall saw a boost in weapon purchases.

.22's in an open field you can get by with just earplugs, but really anything heavier you should be using both. Even with .22's I'd double up indoors, I've never understood indoor shooting ranges; but I grew up in an area so rural that my dad built a backstand with my help with shovels out of sand and, with a short hike down a switchback trail on the mountainside on our property, there was our shooting range (I also built a tree house, and it was where they'd drilled our well. We had a little cable tram for keeping the well up--electric winch at the top (we had a generator), steel cable, metal cart you could tie stuff too, a slope we groomed a bit and kept clear of brambles. Very rugged). So about 90% of all my shooting was done as a kid down there.

eh at my high school's shooting range we fired .22s indoors and just used earplugs

never had ears ringing or anything like that unless we'd been at it for an hour or more
