So about women in Star Trek.

I was watching ST: Nemesis (I know, that was my first mistake) and in the scene where they sent a security team to deal with the Remen intruders, the Remens shot first and took out the only (IIRC, but I didn't see any others) female security officer.

First kill = only female on the team.

What does this say concerning Star Trek and gender roles? :ugeek:

In Enterprise, you have Hoshi Sato: she's scared of spaceflight and doesn't do much except answer the phone and occasionally walk around in her underwear (or topless if the plot needs her to crawl through a vent).

Then Berman gets booted in the fourth season, and suddenly there's a Sato who takes command of the ship and stares down the president of the earth. Also suddenly she has mad kung-fu skills and can hack locks while tripping balls from alien space flu.

pattern or coinkidink

Oh god I remember that. I think a similar or the same episode involved Shran's girlfriend/first officer stripping down to her underwear and trying to seduce a Federation security officer in order to escape from confinement. I can't remember if it was the same episode or not sine it's all just an 'on the television as background noise' blur, but I was kind of dumbfounded that it happened.

All part of their stupid, moronic attempts to sex-up Star Trek.

is this like a complete 180 of the character that pleases the STRONG FEMALE crowd or does she actually build up to being a better person by recognizing her fears and attempting to conquer them

also being asian and knowing kung fu is totally racist

IIRC the actress is totally into martial arts but Berman said 'no'. Then he left and they finally let her slap some aliens around.

If it was her whole character then yeah I'd say racism but lots of people have an interest in martial arts and she was clearly more then just bruce lee with tits, even first season.

so it's just really, really shit writing then

or maybe i forgot the part where drama comes from letting the actors just kinda do what they want in a self-indulgent way

are you saying people donate money to chuck in response to his reviews of star trek episodes

Re: Trek Thread

Yes. And if you do, he'll do an episode you request.

Someone gave him like a 100$ to do Red Dwarf.

apparently he gets enough donations too that he does his own list

but still dedicates them to the donators

this tells me there must be a large fraction of episodes that have been requested

It's a legitimate number but it means nothing without context
