Back from road trip to husbro's granddaughter's graduation from military school in Shreveport, and just like Phant, we had a misadventure with epic thunderstorms on the way up there Friday night. Damn squall line blew in from Mississippi as we departed Baton Rouge and kept pace with us with ferocious purple and orange lightning all the way to Lafayette! Couldn't see a damn thing out the front window, but I did see a tree get blown to Hell and set on fire by a lightning blast a hundred yards off the starboard side on I-10! At least the hotel stay was decent other than the regrettable lack of booze, pot, and sex. Too sleepy to scare any up after that ringside Thor vs Zeus fight on the highway that ran TWO FUCKING HOURS STRAIGHT! :psypop:

P.S. Shreveport water tastes like dirt to out-of-towners

I went back to full time uni at 24. One of the best things I've ever done. You'll be older, but you'll also be wiser.

I'm a 29 year old university dropout. I just got my debts paid off and will be going back at age 30. While I understand the depression that comes with wondering where the hell your life's going, you really need to fucking drop the negative and focus on the positive when you've actually gotten back into school, because that energy wasted on depression will drag you right down.

The way I see it: For any given 18-21 year old in a uni-course, it's probably a coin flip on whether they're there because they want to be, or because they don't know what else to do and are cruising blithely on their parents' funds. It's a fair bet that a decent percentage of them will wash out, go back to their hometowns and spend the rest of their lives working shit jobs.

On the other hand, any 25 year old and beyond? It's a fair bet that they're there because they damn well want to be, they made the conscious choice to go back into school after witnessing some of what 'real life' is actually like, as opposed to just being there because friends and parents pressured/funded their way in. Take some solace and pride in the fact that you're one of the group that actually gives a shit about post-secondary, knows what's at stake, and has the drive to see it through.

27 here and about to start fifth-semester classes.

I spent half a decade in a field that was my childhood passion but quickly turned out to be a, not at all what I expected and b, not something I was actually very good at. I struggled harder and harder to even keep up until one day it all came crashing down around me.

So I said 'fuck it' and started fresh. I'm now doing something that actually interests me, in a field that over here is remarkably recession-proof, and because I already had years of uni experience I've been able to really dig in to the experience. I've signed up for every conference I could find, traveled Europe on the uni's expense, got a foot in the door in some very interesting companies, met wonderful people and really discovered what I can achieve if my heart's in it. And when I graduate I'm almost guaranteed a well-paying job doing what I enjoy.

So what if I take classes with people who are just out of high school - it's not like immaturity rubs off. All I had to do was to get back on board with the lingo and figure out what's 'bodacious' these days. I'm also surrounded by 19-year-old girls.

So yeah, if the price of that is five years of my youth, I consider it a fair trade.

EDIT: one of my friends is getting a doctorate in my old school, so I often visit the campus. And you know what? I doesn't sting any more. It used to... but that's his world now, and I have my own life.

The only time that is truly wasted is the time you spend regretting :ocelot:

Also: Time spent in a coma and/or on public transportation.

omg so the stewarts milk club card applies to their teas and juices and chocolate milk too

i thought there'd be some equal or lesser value bullshit so i couldn't use the buy-five-get-one-free deal buying white milk on the much mroe costly juices and chocolate milks

but nope they do it

omg omg omg

so today i bought two white milks

and tuesday i'm totally buying more milk and some orange juice

then using my free card wednesday to get some chocolate milk

edit: oh another fun thing... they always stamp the card even when doing a free one. so it is kinda like buy four get one free

life = good

This CentOS 6.x VM has required more reboots due to kernel updates over the last 6 months than some of my Windows installs.

What the hell.

i was just watching some news and they were talking about fining big banks like a hundred million pounds

but when you're a trillionaire a hundred million pounds might not be a hit

so i was thinking what if fines were defined as a percentage of your income? let's say fraud hits you with 10%

if a poor person defrauds someone his punitive fine is like $1000, which he'd feel cuz he's poor but is laughably low to a big bank

and if a big bank defrauds someone its punitive fine is like $100,000,000,000 which they might feel too

it seems like a good idea to me but it is so simple surely somoene has done it or else it sucks

so destroy

The way I look at it, you have a few choices: Take classes with kids fresh out of high school, flip burgers with kids fresh out of high school, work a factory line with kids fresh out of high school, or if you're really dedicated, supervise kids fresh out of high school in either of the latter two jobs.

No matter what, you're going to be dealing with kids fresh out of high school.
