but for kids that are at severe disadvantages due to poverty, race, immigrant status, etc, pre-K programs are fantastic not just at teaching them how to be students but also learning how to socialize and work together

an actual school program i can understand, since they actually get to interact with other people and the cost is subsidized in a lot of cases so it is actually both beneficial and accessible to the poor

but what gets me is the products companies sell to parents of children specifically under three years old, saying it will bring them ahead. for example, educational dvds, flash cards, websites, etc. it can be pretty expensive, the content doesn't seem very important (a handful of spanish words or arithmetic trivia... the spanish is always woefully incomplete and the arithmetic will be done early in regular schol anyway)

and to top it off, i doubt it even works well. plopping a child in front of a television is probably double-tempting to poor people too cuz of the time pressure the working poor are already under

and it just strikes me as being total bullshit

You know, if I were going to be an asshole, I could point out that in a workplace with properly defined documentation, coding, and development standards (I.E. coding like a ostensible professional and not a hack), everyone in the office working on code wouldn't result in it being messy and difficult.
