Are you sure it's not anything else? I had BSODs on my new computer which had win7 on it, and it turned out to be bad RAM.evilsoup wrote:lol windows 8 is a buggy piece of crap
I've had 6 BSODs in 3 days

Yup. It's as stable now as Win7 is, which is an amazing accomplishment for an OS that tinkered with that much.joviwan wrote:do you mean "Doesn't crash ever; terrible UI"? Because that's been my experience.Questor wrote:This is the exact the opposite of my experience.

What makes the UI 'terrible', in your opinion?

This city is such a fucking joke. The goddamn clown we elected for a mayor will not suffer consequences for clearly breaking the fucking law because, and I shit you not, his lawyers proposed that he only broke it 'a little'.

Toronto, Canada's Chicago?
Come home to find that UPS just left 500 rounds of ammunition on my doorstep, with a big "DO NOT SAFE DROP" on it. So I called to say "hey your driver just left 500 rounds on my doorstep, what if it had been stolen?"
"You still got the package right? What's the problem?"
Fuck it.

Did you take any photos? Probably didn't record the call I guess.

Never thought too, I was execting them to be helpful afterall.
But I'll order elsewhere next time, someone who uses CanPar.

If you feel strongly about it then find out who you can send a complaint to. Because 'leaving a box of ammunition at an address where nobody was home to collect it' screams negligence to me.
The blase attitude of the person on the phone is a worrying sign.

I'll send an email.
Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
And done. Hopefully they get back to me.
Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
This might seem excessive, but you could involve the police...
Fucking incredible that I can't get a package containing a suit simply dropped at my door but in the same world, a box of explosives gets left at your door.

I could but I won't, I don't trust them not to charge me. Given the attitude I've encountered from the Crown Attorney previously, as well as the politics here in Ontario.
Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
They doubled the amount of actions it takes to shut off the computer, in addition to regular old obfuscation.RyanThunder wrote:What makes the UI 'terrible', in your opinion?
before: start->shutdown
now: hover over the right hand side->settings->power->pick the shutdown one
This isn't the only example, but it's the biggest, boldest example of UI stupidity I can think of while I'm busy at work, and I encountered it within 30 seconds of playing with a Win8 machine.
Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
is that a serious question
because 90% of actual consumers turn their computer off when they aren't using it, which means at least once per day

I hate to sound snide, but is that really the biggest complaint you can think of? Because I just did exactly what you described, using only the mouse, in half a second.joviwan wrote:They doubled the amount of actions it takes to shut off the computer, in addition to regular old obfuscation.RyanThunder wrote:What makes the UI 'terrible', in your opinion?

PS people who actually have a clue just wire up their power button to do the same thing. Which isn't hard to do.
Or if you're me, you wire it up so that it suspends when you close the lid, and then proceed to never properly shut down your computer for like six months.

On the desktop, Alt+F = shutdown
Re: Lament 3: Cry Hard With A Vengeance
Don't worry about snideness. From a power user perspective, this shit is trivial. It's still *stupid*, but it's trivial. reeducating yourself isn't hard at this level.RyanThunder wrote: I hate to sound snide, but is that really the biggest complaint you can think of? The problem is that the vast majority of users aren't going to be people at that level; who are comfortable with that kind of change. As someone who works professionally with the technologically stymied--new users and refuse-to-leave-comfort-zone-users--any change to the UI that adds steps to a known process, or makes something actively more troublesome to accomplish, is an awful change that negatively impacts use.
The point of changing a UI is supposed to be to increase functionality while reducing effort required, and a basic task like "turn off the computer" shouldn't be tucked behind 3 menus when the majority of your target audience are going to a) want do that task repeatedly, and b) need to be told where it is (which win8 doesn't do, as far as I can tell, but I may be mistaken).
It's really nitpicky from my personal perspective, but from a professional one, it gives me hives.

If a new design takes more steps to accomplish the same thing as the old design, it has failed from an improved usability perspective.

Well, in that case;Zod wrote:If a new design takes more steps to accomplish the same thing as the old design, it has failed from an improved usability perspective.
And there's always the power button anyway.Negative Knub wrote:On the desktop, Alt+F = shutdown
tbh if you're so frightened by key chords or 'refuse to leave your comfort zone' (see: lazy) that you can't figure this out, you don't deserve to be catered to in this respect.
I stand by that statement even if that's the general use case.
EDIT: Yes, yes, its elitist, high-handed of me, blah blah blah.
