Jesus, I'm so tired of freetards.

"Copyright is wrong because it damages culture!"
"Why?"
"CUZ I WANNA WATCH TV SHOWS WHEN THEY AIR IN THE US, YOU FASCIST STOOGE OF THE MPAA!!!1!11!!!!1111"
"But you just said that the length of modern copyright is the problem. That stuff is still copyrighted under the oldest definitions."
"COPYRIGHT IS TEH EVIL!!! I WANNA WATCH DOCTOR WHO FOR FREE! I DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR MUSIC!"

ETA: So, wanna bet the freetards start dogpiling with my "Copyright could be limitless" point? Anyone wanna guess whether simon_the_court_jester will have any kind of relevant response to my point about the length of copyright being utterly immaterial in this thread - or any other about piracy?

If the owner of something offers it for sale in one marketplace, by not another, that gives people the moral right to disregard the owners rights

Right

Thus spake the holy writ of nerdity:

Anyone who preventeth thou from thy instant gratification shall be impaled and compared to a Nazi.

I very much enjoy have content released simultaneously or in a very timely manner between regions. But does a delay excuse piracy? Fuck no. Is it one of the (many) reasons for piracy? Of course it fucking is.

I've often wondered about the efficacy of certain content producers/rights holders torrenting their own shows. Sell ads either in traditional "break" format or in the form of "pop ups" of a sort to companies with a global, nerd heavy brand (the torrent audience) and release the official torrent of your product immediately after the broadcast finishes.

Of course, I've got no idea how the figures on that would play out, but that was one of my mad ideas.

speaking of file sharing why do retards insist on uploading shit that's broken up into dozens of archived files?

archived files that are using some archaic bullshit 7zip format no less

fucking shits

if PS2 discs didn't suck so much i could run these games straight from disc via emulator

I think one of the most realistic depictions of space combat in popular sci fi is Star Trek: TNG. They make several observations that a lot of people seem to miss:

2) You don't really have to rotate anything physically to shoot things. The phasers on the Enterprise D can pump power in just about any direction at any time, without much time to re-adjust, similarly to a real life laser. There's no need for several turrets; just use one system that you can point anywhere.
That's a real life laser? I wasn't aware that high-performance phased array lasers were real yet.
is it just me or did he just say the whole point is nothing because phasers aren't real

I've got a sinus infection/chest cold that is keeping me up, that's what's causing all this activity. I've posted more in the past 48 hours than the last six months, I think.

So, I started watching Brisco County Junior recently, and I couldn't help but compare it with Science Fiction's other cult western-sci fi TV show. It struck me that the characters were more quirky and more likeable than the characters of Firefly, and the dialogue was wittier, too (even if the grammar was more conventional). In fact, Brisco County Jr even managed to nail the whole "irony thing" better, and I don't think it was even trying.

What does that leave for Firefly? Is there any facet of that show that hasn't already been done better?
27 episodes vs 13 episodes despite being in the friday night death slot

no contest :smugdog:

I think it's a holdover from Usenet. If I remember right you can't post files above a certain size in one go, so you break it up into a bunch of smaller chunks. I have no idea why it's persisting, though.

i hear they think it makes the total file size smaller somehow

also 7zip is one of the newest compression methods

also i hear we now have laser guided bullets and that this is cool because now we can spend more money on making sure our poor people murder the bad guys' poor people with maximum efficiency

It's supposed to be efficient. Say you downloaded them all then you deleted a few rar files by accident. Would you want to redownload the entire thing again or just those files? I tink it's stupid too. But what pisses me off is when dumbasses Inception their shit: a rar file within a rar file within a rar file.

If you want to be optimistic about it, it could mean that you can now target the ter'rists and just them and not have to bomb a whole funeral procession/wedding ceremony in order to try to kill a specific guy with your drone.
At the least I expect Israel to show an interest in this system.

(Edit : to be clear, any weapon that can allow for the reduction of collateral damage and the preservation of Civilian lives during a conflict is a good thing in my book. You know, surgical strikes and all that jazz...)

the amount of guilt i feel for downloading a show that was broadcast over the air for free is something near zero

even less if it's something not made available to me at all for some reason or another

yet i still pay for hulu and redbox and my songs

i am the freetard

It's an artifact that the 'scene' uses ftp* to transfer stuff around, and zero-day torrent sites do little more than grab the scene release and throw it into a .torrent file exactly as is.

*ftp is an amazingly basic protocal which has nothing to protect against incidental corruption but has effectively very small overheads.

I'll just settle for stuff which is even sold in the first place. It wasn't very long ago where it was literially imposible to get a lot of series outside of the original country after the original airing run.

Just look at the effort Google has gone to get the copyright on abandoned books where it is imposible to even find the copyright holders anymore.

:edit: And I'm going to make sure I never buy a copy of a book written by Ursula K. Le Guin. Fuck her on protesting that someone dares makes the written works of humanity publically searchable.
