He's a Civil War general, right?

Yeah, Sherman was a Union general. Famous for being turned loose to sack and pillage his way through Georgia and burn shit down along the way.

yes. a lot of people like shep have a huge hard-on because of the supposed devastation of his campaigns, which is ridiculously exaggerated by neo-confederates to play up sympathy for their cause
e.g. he fought "total war" but refrained from targeting civilians or even attacking civilian properties deliberately, in opposition to the douhetist philosophies shep lurves of attacking civilians directly
he also, after the war, served with a mixed record commanding the us army in the plains wars. he advocated destruction and slaughter of the lakota and other sioux nations but spoke out against exploitation of native americans on the reservations afterwards.

oh so when i left my house to go to merkz for tv night
omg the birds apparently got driven out of downtown
and decided to set up shop outside my door
so i have like a ten yard trip down the driveway
which has trees all above it
CAW CAW splat CAW CAW CAW splat splat CAW
oh my there must have been at least a thousand of them
i'm not even j/kin
so i figure i'll just have to dive through it
normally you have to use thrusters only until you leave the spacedock
but i totally violated the regulations
no, not one quarter impulse power
WARP FACTOR ONE
so as i passed through it startled the birds and they all started to fly
the sound was deafening
the sky was blacked out
(well the sun already went down so lol but i'm telling you that was a lot of fucking birds)
then once i got on the road for the two mile trip
not another bird seen the whole time

These things are NOT arbitrary. What are ethics? Principles applied to govern how we ought interact with others. What is the underpinning of it? Well, we have this thing, it is called empathy. We also have logic.
philosophy 205 i think was the name of that class that talked about this on day 1
sure i failed it
but that's because i couldn't find the final exam. i was there on day 1 tho

So I have these gift cards from the holidays still, including $100 at JT Schmidts, which is a p nice place (Microbrew, Steaks, etc..) across from the Honda Center where the Ducks play and I just so happen to have a day off and just so happen to have tickets to the game tonight (playing the hated FLAMES) but that is not the point.
The point is the amazing meal I would have never been able to afford otherwise, a menu item known as the $20 burger.
It's a big burger, topped with prime rib (sliced thin), add bacon, then cheese, toasted brioche bun. Fuckin' A. I don't know if I would pay $20 of my own money for such a meal, but oh it was damn fine, and this place actually does do rare which was perfect because dry prime rib is not much fun.

adr if you were in an intro ethics class that started by saying "ethics and moral judgments are arbitrary" then it must have been a very unusual class
i mean alyrium is wrong if he thinks "the underpinning of ethics" is "empathy", and that's all there is to it
but you're making some philosophically outrageous claims in that thread
sorry

thank you, i appreciate it
i can't post more over there because red was like "if you're not in the debate already then please don't start dogpiling now" and if i entered the thread, then he'd have to moderate it, or else people would be all "OMG NEPOTISM" and they'd have a point
(ps we should get that police light smiley back in, i needed that for "omg nepotism")
i might post more here later today, when i have time. i'm going out for lunch soon. but just for a quick thing -- i'm guessing you don't really believe there are no "morally inconsiderable" things. like i doubt you go through life worrying about whether you're mistreating the grass you step on, the bacteria you kill when you use antibiotics, etc. let alone inanimate objects like rocks and articles of clothing.
if i'm wrong, then you live a more ethically agonized life than anyone i know
i agree with you that if i were given the choice to kill one bacterium, or let it live, i would let it live. but i wouldn't be doing it for the sake of the bacterium itself -- i'd be doing it for the (very small) chance that killing the bacterium would upset some ecosystem that had a causal effect on beings with more interesting mental lives (which is not limited to humans obvs). if there were someone who would benefit from the death of the bacterium, then i would kill the bacterium without a second thought
another quick thing -- in general, just because something is a potential X doesn't mean it has all the moral or legal rights of a real X. like, my sister is 13 and so she's a potential 16-year-old and 18-year-old, but she can't drive or vote.
