course people care
occasionally a law will get proposed to outlaw that outrageous shit
but it's not in the interests of the people in charge and they can effectively neutralize your vote through any number of shit so it never happens

it is kinda a self sustaining thing
the way it works is at the census time the states redraw the districts to deal with the changing populations, meaning to equalize them. not the worst idea ever
but the problem is the same people who draw the maps
are elected by those maps
so they fuck it up to reinforce themselves then use that power next time to do it some more
now people bitch about it every time it happens
but complaining is about as far as it gets

in au one of our states hadn't changed in ages and so the rural vote was hugely dominant
and he was amazingly corrupt but his opponents were powerless
but the system changed them anyway

The weirdest thing is that New Jersey, which is about as corrupt and rotten as it's possible to be, has a constitutional amendment mandating sensible legislative districts.
SCOTUS has ruled political gerrymandering is just super, btw. Which is why I tell people that you shouldn't rely on the Supreme Court to fix all the legislature's mistakes, just in case they forgot about Dred Scott (black people aren't citizens; implied bans on slavery in the north were unconstitutional) or Plessy v Ferguson (separate but equal) or the string of 19th century rulings that overturned child labor bans.

Where I live is an interesting case. The local districts are gerrymandered to Hell and back (the town I live in is split between 3 districts).
But when you get to the federal level, it's pretty much impossible to pull off any shenanigans.
Tiny state, two congressional districts. Basically just draw a line that puts about half the population on either side and call it a day.
The fact that the Republican party is so weak in this state that there's no point to trying shenanigans helps.

Or, for that matter,
Muller v. Oregon, which declared that women's reproductive health is the domain of the state in the course of upholding the ten-hour-workday.
But anyways, gerrymandering benefits everybody. Democrats use it to marginalize old people, Republicans use it to marginalize blacks and Latinos, and everybody's happy, except for whoever is losing out at the moment. It's like "state's rights"- they only really matter to whoever's currently out of power in the US, though the Republican party may have claimed it completely in recent years.

so somebody on the internet caled the employee/employer split of payroll taxes a brilliant illusion
that implies to me that if the employer didn't pay the tax, they'd actually raise people's pay (and then of course the government would tax it so the worker breaks even)
but somehow i really really really doubt that.

It is where they put massive detail in the texture which would normally be computed at runtime if the GPU it was designed to run on wasn't +5-8 years old, and they could be bothered to write a few cases of the code running on the GPU. This as a concequence takes up massive disk space, lots of graphics memory, and imposes harsh consequences for graphics quality if the stupidly sized textures can't be streamed by the time someone looks at them.
It's a horrible hack and completely ignores advances in computational graphics in favour of not actually using the hardware they have at the expense of a fucking massive commitment in artist time. As if AAA games wheren't expensive enough due to the level of detail.
