Man-eating giants plague the Earth and mankind has been reduced to a million souls in a single tiny walled-in country which has withstood attack for the last century. But can this safety last forever?
(spoiler alert: probably not)
The big theme so far seems to be the choice between accepting the inevitable, getting by as best you can and hoping it doesn't get worse knowing you will never improve the situation or taking a risk even if it seems hopeless.

Are the giants an allegory for something ?
They looks like some kind of zombie-like mindless man-eaters, with the added bonus of being giants.

I dunno probably :L
Like even though I know it's not the case I can see a case for them being an allegory for outer space so I figure there's a good shot there's some allegory for something there

I liked how none of the stuff from the preview at the end of 2 was actually in the movie.
PREDICTION: 3 is second to last chronologically but not third. 4 will be the last and will end with a preview for a previously un-mentioned 5 that covers the gap between 2 and 3, to be released fall of 2019.

And yet an awful lot of what was in the preview is implied to take place in the skip between 2 and 3, e.g. Unit 6 descending to Terminal Dogma, Unit 8 coming online, some kind of internal conflict in Nerv, etc.
Fuyutski and Gendo's magical donkey adventure is still a mystery, though.

Watched a few clips of Shingeki No Kyojin. Almost horrified enough to start watching the series.

I've watched the first episode and it's interesting enough that I want to see more, but the subsequent eps haven't been fan-subbed yet.

Finally watched Evangelion 2.22 (waiting for 3.33's torrent to finish downloading)
I don't think there's much ground to compare how much better than the original series these movies are.
Even if you could argue that this kind of goes against the themes of the original series, I like the fact that in the movies so far (1 & 2) Shinji is comparatively more assertive and far less of a wreck ; and more generally that all the characters feels more humans and less like "archetypes". They seem to have more depth to their character.
Also, I don't know who's that crazy American girl, but she's cool.
All the movie was cool, and I didn't feel like there was any padding. Everything felt like it served a purpose.
Also, I love the scenery porn they did with Tokyo-3 throughout the movie.

On a sidenote, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief, but if there's something that always ticked at said suspension with me regarding Evangelion
is that supposedly it's set only, what, fifteen years after Second Impact, an event which led to the death of half of mankind
and not only did they manage to rebuild at least Japan to have First World living standards and the industrial infrastructure that comes with it (supposedly after half of the population died or even more given most of the population lived near the coasts)
But they also have the sheer industrial capabilities to have built in a few years the amount of infrastructure, civilian and military, we can see in Tokyo-3
And let's not talk about the fact that they have a space program developed enough to have a lunar base.
This is just sheer madness. The only "rational" explanation I have is that actually Tokyo-3 and what we see throughout the movies is the exception rather than the norm, the rest of the world being pressured and pressured hard working in terrible conditions just so that the NERV, worldwide, has the tools to fight the Angels.
But that "Marine Life Restoration Project" may be a proof that they have enough resources to launch a project of a very large scope that isn't directly related to the fight against the angels. Though it's on the other hand destined to give back life to the Earth's oceans, so this seems logical that they would dedicate some amount of resources to such an initiative.

Mari is actually from England. It's why she's part named after an English ship.

The original series alludes to the massive burden even the maintenance of the Evangelions puts on humanitarian efforts for refugees. I think it's worth pointing out that Maya's whole character is about wonder and awe regarding the power of human science and ingenuity - she's old enough to remember the world before Second Impact, the years of 'pure hell' etc. Evengelion is almost an ode to us, in a way.
My shit is so lost that I will need to inexplicably fly to antarctica to get it back
