I'm assuming he was joking about that last part.

I really don't know anything about Mongolian politics, so I don't know how accurate any of the rest is either.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami. Both seem to be the usual stuff assigned in a lit class, and neither seems very interesting.

No book is interesting if you approach it with that attitude

mang the gospel principles teacher at the church today had to feed her new baby (babies wait for no schedule) and asked the missionaries to be her last-minute substitute. they promptly decided to forward that request to me.

that's my payback for canceling on them this friday lol. (and they were so sad when i said i had to tend to other matters too. some part of me thinks they just pretend as to avoid shattering my fragile ego, but on the other hand, going to my house /actually/ might be one of their nicer visits.)

anywho, they said it was on chapter 8 of the book so i spent the two minutes of time i had before the thing began to speed-read it... then turns out they got the number wrong, it was chapter 9. whoops. had to figure it out as i went

but hey at least i had the book and believe it or not, it all went on schedule and i have not yet been excommunicated for teaching false doctrine so i guess that's pretty ok. i knew enough background to embellish a bit too, i hate it when teachers do nothing except read from a book, you can read a book on your own, if you are in a classroom the teacher should embellish and the group should contribute.

(indeed after like 15 minutes of me rambling, i realized i was talking too much and started getting the whole group talking. the senior sister missionary had a lot of cool stuff to talk about, she really knows her stuff.)

but yeah, it was a small group, like eight folks and i knew four of them fairly well....

regardless, my armpits are kinda soaked.

I submitted my first paper of the semester yesterday. I spent six pages glorifying totalitarianism and extolling the virtues of a police state. It was awesome.

That's the spirit!

My most interesting essay was for a film class where I said that attempts to establish a film canon were ridiculous because the authority on which they rested was murky at best. So you've got me beat there pretty thoroughly.

But alas all things must come to an end, and in time the economic forces that plagued East Germany’s suzerain came to a head, leading to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the splintering of the Warsaw Pact and the collapse of most of its client regimes. What followed was the sad old tale of the crumbling of order as a foul tide of liberalism and democracy flowed in to engulf what was once the pristine beauty of an ordered state. Free and open elections were held, and Germany was once again reunited under the auspices of the West German state in a grim reminder of the fate that awaits any regime which lacks the will to enact the Chinesische Lösung.
I got an A- for that.

The professor is a Republican.

I considered actually citing Grand Moff Tarkin at one point, but I decided that would be going too far and just left the quote unattributed.

First World Problem time: Why the fuck are audiobooks so expensive? My plan to rent from the library and rip is not working out because of shitty citizens not taking care of free items. Now I'm looking to actually buy the things.

Because actors expect money to narrate them, which usually takes a long ass time. They're also a niche market (or were, they've been becoming more popular) and as such they can/need to charge more to make a profit.

Where are you looking? Audible.com tends to give decent deals for members with a subscription, including some pretty steep discounts.

The Harry Potter audiobooks. They are only available via Pottermore, and they range from $30-$45 a piece.

Oh. Well then, I guess you're kind of fucked. Rowlings can demand pretty much any price she wants and people will pay it.

Audible offers a lot of audiobooks at a huge discount if you buy the Kindle version from Amazon...

I just got King Solomon's Mines for 99 cents by buying a (free) Kindle edition.
