Finally, as was promised during the presidential elections, after weeks of parliamentary debates which made the right-wing opposition look like complete retards (5000 amendments were proposed for the law in question),

A same-sex couple has now the same rights as an heterosexual couple in the eyes of the law regarding marriage. I'll need to look up if they also opened adoption, but I would guess the answer is yes.

Is the House of Lords a rubber stamp ala the canuck senate?

They're not really a rubber stamp. I'm sure they've sent stuff back the commons before. Even several times.

But They've got their heads screwed on straight. Pretty sure the stuff they send back was legit stupid.

They do send stuff back, but they can't outright veto it, only delay for up to a year (they can only delay money bills by up to a month). And the government can force legislation through the Lords if they want (this is only used or budgets in general), since the Commons has primacy.

Even with the Bishops in the House of Lords, I doubt that they'll really try to act against gay marriage.

But the main point is the French beat us to it *smirk*

We'd be damned if a country whose head of state is also head of the Church somehow managed to get to it before us. :v

that said, we've had gay marriage in all but name for a few years now, and one catholic adoption agency got shut down because they wouldn't deal with gay adopters so

Tasmania tried last year, but it got crushed by the old white men of the upper house.

In other news a friend invited me around for pancakes last night, but I had to apologise on the basis of a long standing engagement. She said that if it fell through there was still pancakes.

Then at around 10:30pm she sent me a picture of herself dressed as batgirl. Probably should have gone for pancakes.

Thing is she's been a friend for so long that I keep thinking 'nah she's just being a bro'

And then on the other hand I've been single for long enough to think 'could this be real or am I reading it wrong'
